Her current book project, Outsiders Within: Volunteers in Service to America (VISTA) and the Boundaries of Citizenship, 1962-1971, is the first comprehensive history of VISTA during the War on Poverty. Dr. Murphy evaluates the relationship among civic engagement, citizenship, and socioeconomic identities through the lens of VISTA (one of the country's longest-running national community service programs). She is also a proud AmeriCorps VISTA and NCCC (National Civilian Community Corps) alumna.
