Dr. Matthew Simmons is a native of Magee, Mississippi. He attended Tugaloo College (an HBCU located just north of Jackson, Mississippi), where he earned his B.A. in History in 2008. He obtained his M.A. (2013) and PhD (2021) in African American Studies from Temple University. His dissertation research investigated Black Middle-Class abstention in Philadelphia, PA, and connected their non-voting practices to maroon communities. His research interests look at Black Middle-Class Abstention and Black Queer Politics.
