Mark Ortiz

Mark Ortiz(he/him) is an Assistant Professor of Geography and faculty member within the Institute of Energy and the Environment and Social Science Research Institute at Penn State University. His research areas include youth-centered research, social movement studies, global environmental and climate politics, community-based methods in the U.S. South, and multimedia storytelling approaches. Mark is the Creator and Director of the Global Youth Storytelling and Research Lab (The GYSRL) at Penn State, a student-centered platform that aims to bridge youth-centered research, education, storytelling, and policy work. Mark has been active as a researcher and contributor in international climate policy processes, including the United Nations international climate negotiations, where he has spoken on panels related to intergenerational inclusion and studied the role of youth engagement in shaping international policy outcomes. He is also one of twelve fellows involved with the Young Researchers' Network supported by the European Union. His work is published and forthcoming in a variety of scholarly and public-facing venues, including Climate and Development, Humanities and Social Sciences Communications, The Forge, and the Routledge Handbook of Grassroots Climate Activism.
