UAB Department of Radiology
The Department of Radiology has 106 full-time faculty, including radiologists, physicists, translational researchers, informaticists, and biostatisticians. Imaging services for cancer patients are broad and include approximately 30,000 CT and 25,000 MRI exams for cancer patients. The Research Division has 4 core laboratories and multiple administrators, study coordinators and regulatory experts.
UAB Radiology Information Technology
UAB Radiology has Philips iSite (Clinical), Philips iSite (Research) and Ambra (Research) picture archiving and communication systems (PACS). The UAB Radiology Research PACS is a flexible and customizable to each investigator and/or study. The UAB Radiology Research PACS can be easily accessed from any research computer, has extensive file handling and data and image management tools, and is a secure file storage system for both images and data files. The system provides user and group secure access that is suitable for the proposed study. We have a custom bulk image anonymization software that can be used to query, retrieve and anonymize CT and MR images. We also have access to Qualtrics for designing and deploying web-based databases.
UAB Tumor Metrics Lab
The UAB Tumor Metrics lab provides image interpretation services for all cancer patients on clinical trials with imaging endpoints at UAB. We currently evaluate 1,300 imaging studies per year using tumor response criteria including: RECIST 1.1 iRECIST, Lugano, Cheson, mRECIST HCC, mRECIST mesothelioma, RANO, etc. The UAB Tumor Metrics Lab recently installed the AI Metrics platform on a server that is connect to the radiology Philips iSite picture archiving and communication system (PACS).
Advanced Imaging Lab
A new Advanced Imaging Analysis Lab measures 262 square feet and contains 5 cubicle desks, each with desktop personal computers and monitors (all with dual monitors). All PC desktop computers (x6) are capable of accessing the clinical and research PACS and AI Metrics, ShareFile virtual file storage, REDCap, Qualtrics, etc. The lab has established standard operating procedures for establishing new user logins, reservation system for room use, specific login criteria for each windows, linux, and iMac workstations.
Image Processing Lab
The Image Processing Lab measures 300 square feet and contains 5 cubicle desks, each with an advanced workstation with numerous image processing software platforms. It has become evident that the human imaging research protocols demands heavy utilization of the more advanced imaging systems, including MRI, state of the art multidetector CT, and PETCT. The capabilities in the UAB Department of Radiology also include contrast enhanced Ultrasound, and Spectral (dual energy) CT.
