The MSM-SR chargeback's are based on the combined cost of equipment usage, disposables, collaborative laboratory pricing, and percent efforts. The LIMS and O’Neal CCC billing system allow for accurate tracking of facility services provided to PI's, in addition to the generation of quotes prior to initiation of a project. In this way PI's are aware of what each project will cost and electronically approve both the planned experimental design and the quoted cost upfront through our LIMS. No matter which lab carries out the metabolomics experiments in the end, members of the O’Neal CCC are encouraged to submit samples through the MSM Shared Resource to include free consultation by the Director along with supplemented pricing in order to encourage the use of LCMS driven metabolomics in cancer research at UAB.

For overall cost, the Director of the MSM facility will help the PI/users to determine the overall pricing for studies prior to initiating an experiment, which may include unBiased/ Discovery, Targeted, and/ or Targeted Flux experiments. The final price will be determined based on the type of specimen that is analyzed, along with the type and number of metabolites are of interest. In general, the current targeted runs are charged at a range of $100±$25 per metabolite for each sample submitted, this includes sample preparation, quantification & basic statistics. For those wanting to validate a few metabolites per sample this price goes up corresponding to each metabolite and class of metabolite added.

For the unbiased/ discovery metabolomics runs, these generally cost $300-$400 per sample in a similar fashion to the targeted studies, Flux experiments will depend on the number of metabolites of interest and will generally run $150-$500 per sample and time point corresponding to 1-5 metabolites of a similar class.
