If you have a bachelor’s degree and would like to explore employment opportunities in education (but are not pursuing teacher certification), then UAB is the place to be! By pursuing this innovative master’s in Educational Studies, you can develop expertise for working within a wide range of education-related careers. This program promotes UAB’s mission by supporting the teaching and application of knowledge at the campus, state, regional, and global levels. For example, some international students have come to UAB and earned this master's degree for seeking career advancement in their own countries.
Our master’s degree in Educational Studies (30 Credit Hours) facilitates the flexibility needed for meeting personal and professional goals that are not associated with state-issued educator certification. This flexibility is evident in how our courses are delivered.
- International students take on-ground courses to meet student visa stipulations.
- Local students take a mixture of on-ground and online courses.
- Distance students take 100% online courses.
Program flexibility allows you to choose a concentration from among several concentration options, take the most appropriate course in each area of the program core, and select one or more elective courses.
Concentration (12 credit hours)
During the application process, you will choose a concentration from among the following options:
- Early Childhood Education
- Elementary Education
- Secondary Education
- Special Education
- Physical Education
- English Language Education
Program Core (15 credit hours)
To complete your master’s degree, you will choose five courses from the program core, with one course from each of these five areas:
- Curriculum Design/ Program Implementation/ Methods
- Assessment and Measurement
- Diverse Populations
- Special Education
- Core/ Practicum/ Capstone

Curriculum
The curriculum entails 30 credit hours of coursework selected by students for best meeting their targeted professional outcomes. Each semester, you will meet with a faculty advisor for guidance in registering for courses. Depending on your needs, you will take online courses, on-ground courses, or a mixture of online and on-ground.
