Majors and Concentrations

The School of Education and Human Sciences offers a BS in Secondary Education with two concentrations and a STEM education minor to prepare students to succeed in a specific content area. Learn about those concentrations below.

Upon completing our BS in Secondary Education, students can apply for their Class B teaching certification with the Alabama State Department of Education.

English Language Arts Concentration

With the English Language Arts concentration, you can use your passion for reading, writing, and teaching to pursue a career in Secondary Education. English Language Arts is a broad teaching field that encompasses composition, theatre, mass communications, public speaking, a survey of the literature, and upper-level teaching field courses.

General Social Science Concentration

Intellectually curious and career-minded students have a variety of options through the General Social Sciences concentration. Social scientists study all aspects of society, from historical events and human achievements to the geographic landscape and government formation. This concentration offers a curriculum across many departments.

UAB is one of the few universities that see the value in ensuring STEM educators are masters of their content area. We offer an 21-credit hour STEM education minor add-on for STEM majors to earn their teaching certification. The UABTeach program is working to prepare the next generation of STEM educators in Alabama.
