Teach Children of All Ages to Make Music
Do you love music and want a career making and teaching it? If so, consider majoring in music with a concentration in music education at UAB and earning teacher certification in choral music or instrumental music. Offered through the College of Arts and Sciences and the School of Education and Human Sciences, this music education focused program aims to help students become exceptional musicians, as well as well-prepared educators.

Major
Once you complete the program, you are eligible to complete the process for Class B certification from the Alabama State Department of Education. You will be certified to teach choral music or instrumental music from pre-kindergarten through 12th grade (P–12).
The BA in Music, offered through the Department of Music opens a new website in the College of Arts and Sciences, includes two music education concentrations for students who want to teach instrumental or vocal education. Students pursuing this degree complete coursework in both the Department of Music and the School of Education and Human Sciences, with specific courses related to instrumental or vocal education depending on which teaching path is chosen.
From Application to Graduation
- When you apply you must pass a juried audition and take a music theory assessment.
- After completing music and education courses at the sophomore level and jurying up in ensembles and private lessons, you will submit a Teacher Education Program (TEP) application.
- After being admitted to TEP, you will take courses at the junior level and beyond. Many courses include clinical experiences in elementary and secondary schools to learn how to teach music.
- During your final semester, you will do a 15-week student teaching internship.
Completing this program is like having a double major. To earn your degree and qualify for certification, you must complete the core curriculum courses, music courses, and education courses in your concentration:
- Choral Music Education (125 credit hours)
- Instrumental Music Education (126 credit hours)

Curriculum
The music education portion of the BA in Music is a collaborative partnership between the School of Education and Human Sciences and the College of Arts and Sciences. The curriculum is designed to ensure that our graduates are exceptional musicians and well-prepared educators.

Our music education programs are accredited by the ALSDE and the Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation (CAEP). The UAB Department of Music is nationally recognized and accredited by the National Association of Schools of Music.
Honors Opportunities
Students in the Music Honors Program present a public recital sponsored by the Department of Music or present a series of original compositions. On most occasions, you will be accompanied by a professional accompanist. If you complete the program, you will graduate “With Honors in Music.”
