UAB's Secondary Education program prepares educators to recognize and meet the evolving needs of students in today’s society. Your passion for reading, writing, mentoring students, and working with other educators to prepare tomorrow’s communicators and leaders can be realized at UAB through our English Language Arts teacher certification degree. English Language Arts is a broad teaching field that encompasses composition, theatre, mass communications, public speaking, a survey of the literature, and upper-level teaching field courses. This program prepares candidates to teach grades 6-12.

As a secondary education student majoring in English Language Arts, you will research methods and materials and use technology for creating active learners, readers, and writers, in your own future classroom. You will study multi-cultural literature, interact with text, and learn best practices for applying the rules of language to communicate meaning in all aspects of living in and interpreting our world.

  • 6 out of the last 9 Alabama Teachers of the Year are alumni of the UAB School of Education and Human Sciences.

  • Students have the opportunity to take EH 401 - Tutoring Writing - and gain experience by working in the University Writing Center.
  • Students can participate in service-learning opportunities, including mentoring high school students throughout the state with GEAR UP Alabama.
  • UAB is home to the Red Mountain Writing Project, one of the 180 National Writing Project sites in the United States. The RMWP has programs throughout the year to support teachers of writing and other educators.
