During the approximately four-hour loading process 7th Avenue South between 19th and 20th streets south will be closed to traffic. Contractors will bring in heavy equipment to demolish the Kracke building beginning 7 a.m. Oct. 9. During the approximately four-hour offloading process 7th Avenue South between 19th and 20th streets south will be closed to traffic.
“As we move through this demolition and construction process for the new Altec Styslinger Genomic Medicine and Data Sciences Building, we are working to ensure we have limited impact to pedestrian and vehicular traffic,” said Denton Lunceford, assistant vice president of Facilities’ Planning Design & Construction. “We have scheduled this closure to happen on the weekend when there is limited traffic.”

Construction fencing will be placed this week around the Kracke and Pittman buildings in preparation for their demolition. The buildings are being razed to make way for the Altec Styslinger Genomic Medicine and Data Sciences Building. The fencing will block pedestrian access on the north side of 7th Avenue South between 19th and 20th streets south. All lanes of traffic on 7th Avenue South will remain open.
Pedestrian access to the north side of 7th Avenue South will be restricted for the duration of the project, which is expected to be completed in June 2024.

Since UAB transitioned to a Limited Business Operations model in March, many faculty, staff, and students were unable to retrieve their bicycles from campus. To ensure their safety, UAB Sustainability, in coordination with UAB Transportation and UAB Police and Public Safety, is collecting bicycles that have remained in one place for more than two weeks and storing them. They will be safely stored and can be retrieved at the beginning of the Fall semester.

UPDATE: Beginning Sunday, March 15, electrical work by Alabama Power Company will progress on the eastbound lane of 7th Avenue South, from 16th to 18th streets south.
To minimize disruption of traffic on campus, construction will take place at night, between 6 p.m. and 6 a.m. each day. Police will assist with traffic control, including emergency vehicles, for the duration of this project.
This closure will not affect the westbound lane of 7th Avenue South. Traffic headed north on 16th Street South must turn left on 7th Avenue South, toward 14th Street South.
The Volker Hall loading dock, Parking Lot 8, and Parking Lot 12 will still be accessible to westbound traffic on 7th Avenue South. Traffic exiting this area must turn right and travel east toward 18th Street South.
The project is expected to be complete in approximately one week. This closure is part of underground electrical work by Alabama Power Co.

Beginning Monday, Feb. 3, the eastbound lane of 7th Avenue South, between 14th and 16th streets south will close due to electrical work by Alabama Power Company. This closure will not affect the westbound lane of 7th Avenue South.
The Hill Student Center loading dock, on 7th Avenue South, will still be accessible for deliveries. Traffic exiting this area must turn left and travel west on 7th Avenue South, toward 14th Street South.
The project is expected to be complete in approximately six weeks. Please be aware of the impacted areas and plan accordingly.

Portion of 20th Street South Sidewalk closed due to renovation
Exterior renovation on the eastside of the McCallum Basic Health Science Building has closed the sidewalk on 20th Street South, between 7th Avenue South and University Boulevard, to ensure pedestrian safety.
The sidewalk next to McCallum, on the west side of 20th Street South, will be closed to pedestrians. Using signage and physical barriers, pedestrians will be directed away from the renovation site to the sidewalk next to the Administration Building, on the east side of 20th Street South.
This sidewalk is expected to be closed until May 2020.
Please be aware of the impacted areas and plan accordingly.
This closure is part of an ongoing exterior building renovation project announced in May 2019.
Portion of 10th Avenue South to close
Beginning Monday, Nov. 18, construction will close portions of 10th Avenue South, between 14th and 17th streets south as part of utility work by Alabama Power Co.
Construction will occur in three phases:
- Phase 1: Construction on 10th Avenue South, from 14th to 16th streets south, is expected to be completed within two weeks.
- Phase 2: The 10th Avenue South and 16th Street South intersection will be closed following the completion of Phase 1. It is expected to be complete within a week.
- Phase 3: Also beginning Nov. 18, 10th Avenue South, from 16th to 17th streets south, will be closed to traffic until the end of December.
Paving project impacts campus
Beginning Tuesday, Nov. 5, road paving will affect portions of campus in phases.
To minimize disruption of traffic on campus, construction will take place at night, between 7 p.m. and 6 a.m. each day. Police will assist with traffic control, including emergency vehicles, for the duration of this project. Please exercise caution in these areas.
Restriping of the road will occur during day shift hours as the project progresses.
The areas affected include:
- 19th Street South from 5th Avenue South to 6th Avenue South
- 6th Avenue South from 19th Street South to 18th Street South
- 18th Street South from 6th Avenue South to University Boulevard
- 7th Avenue South from 18th Street South to 14th Street South
- 14th Street South from 7th Avenue South to the alley north of APCO steam plant, between 6th and 5th Avenues South
The project is expected to be complete in approximately one week. Please be aware of the impacted areas and plan accordingly.
This is a part of the recently completed installation of all underground piping for the Industrial Water Project.

Beginning Monday, Sept. 9, the ongoing industrial water project will impact traffic moving southbound on 14th Street South, between 5th and 6th avenues south. Northbound traffic will be clear.
After this portion of the project is complete, construction with progress down 14th Street South, towards 7th Avenue South. Construction is expected to be complete by Sept. 20.
Detour routes and traffic instructions will be posted at the construction sites. Please be aware of the impacted areas and plan accordingly.
The project was first announced on June 24th.
Construction to impact 6th Avenue South, 18th Street South intersection
Beginning Aug. 23, traffic will be impacted at the intersection at 6th Avenue South and 18th Street South. This portion of the project will take place between 7 p.m. and 6 a.m. Traffic should not be affected during normal business hours until the week of Sept. 3.
After this portion of the project is complete, construction will progress down 18th Street South, between 6th and 7th avenues south. Northbound lanes will be closed during this portion of construction.
Detour routes and traffic instructions will be posted at the construction sites. Please be aware of the impacted areas and plan accordingly.

Beginning the week of August 19, the ongoing industrial water project will impact traffic moving westbound on 6th Avenue South, between 18th and 19th streets south, will be closed for one week. Eastbound traffic will be clear. North Pavilion entrance will still be accessible from the eastbound lane.
Detour routes and traffic instructions will be posted at the construction sites. Please be aware of the impacted areas and plan accordingly.

New building construction to close portion of 9th Avenue South
Construction on 9th Avenue South, between 17th and 18th streets south, will have long term traffic impacts. Construction of the UAB Technology Innovation Center will cause lanes of traffic to be closed to ensure pedestrian and traffic safety.
