The University of Alabama at Birmingham defines first-generation students similar to the Federal Government: First-generation students who come from families where neither parent/guardian completed a four-year college degree. 

Of UAB undergraduate students, 23% are first-generation, and 35% of the first-year class are first-generation Blazers.
