First Blazers Peer Mentoring
Are you a first-generation UAB student looking for support, guidance, and community? Then, become a First Blazer!
The First Blazers program supports first-gen UAB students at any stage of their college careers. The First Blazers program supports first-gen, first-year students in transitioning to life at UAB by connecting them with peer groups made up of first-gen students and led by first-gen mentors. Each month, First Blazers meet with their upper-class mentors—creating a space for first-gen students to support each other in their journeys to graduation.
For First Blazers who are beyond their first year at UAB, mentors will meet one-on-one or in the group setting in support of their progress towards earning their degrees. Mentees who are not in their first year can meet with mentors monthly, drop-in for mentor support as needed, or attend a group mentoring session, program event, and/or set-up appointments with the First Blazers advisor.
Throughout your year in First Blazers, you will build a community of support consisting of supportive mentors and peers, accessible resources, service opportunities, and social engagement.
Joining First Blazers is not only the start of a successful year at UAB but also a big step in your journey towards graduation.
Eligibility
To become a member of First Blazers, a student must be a UAB First-generation college student. At UAB, we define first-generation students as those whose parents, stepparents, and/or legal guardians have not earned an undergraduate degree in the U.S. Having parents, stepparents, or legal guardians who have earned associate degrees and/or credit towards post-secondary graduation does not disqualify you from this program.
Students who are currently receiving support from one of UAB’s TRIO programs are not eligible for First Blazers.
Application Process
The First Blazer application is always open, meaning you can join at any point during the academic year.
First Blazer mentees will attend an orientation meeting with all participants and mentors in early September to meet their mentee group and mentor, review program expectations, receive the meeting schedule, and discuss program events.
