First Generation Student Success creates environments and supports for first-generation college student success at UAB.
Being a first-generation college student at UAB means you are a First-gen Blazers! We know it is important to you and your family to enter UAB, excel in your in- and out-of-classroom endeavors, and to graduate. We are here to help you do that.
First-generation initiatives include supports, programs, and resources at UAB designed to foster a sense of belonging and remove barriers for students. These initiatives are hosted by Academic and Student Affairs’ units. UAB Faculty and Staff are committed to the success of all Blazers.

Academic Supports
TRIO Programs
UAB has several Federally-funded TRIO programs designed to identify and provide services for individuals who are low-income, first-generation college students, and individuals with disabilities.
Vulcan Materials Academic Success Center (VMASC)
The Vulcan Materials Academic Success Center (VMASC) fosters undergraduate student success by creating a supportive environment and delivering academic services that encourage goal achievement and degree completion. Services provided include tutoring, supplemental instruction, academic advising, success advising, workshops and study hours.
