Course Descriptions—Interpretation of the Academic Achievement Scale

ELI 011 Reading:

By the end of this course, students will be able to understand readings of up to 200 words that have Level 1 grammar and vocabulary. They will be able to predict content from pictures and titles; scan for dates, names and other specific information; understand main ideas, the sequence of events, comparisons, and simple cause and effect; and make simple critical responses to the reading. They will be able to guess vocabulary meaning from context and use new vocabulary.

ELI 012 Integrated Skills:

By the end of this course, students will know the grammar of basic verb tenses, simple sentence structure, nouns, adjectives, adverbs, and prepositions. They will be able to apply this knowledge in speaking and writing about everyday situations. Students will know basic vocabulary for topics such as describing self and others, classroom, time, daily routine and common activities, clothes, house and furniture, and jobs. They will be able to apply this knowledge in speaking and writing. Students will be able to speak with developing fluency in groups and individually for short periods. They will make efforts to use English pronunciation of word sounds and sentence stress and intonation. Students will apply listening skills to understand classroom language and recorded dialogs. They will understand speech that is slower and clearer than typical natural speech, and that uses the grammar and vocabulary they learned in the course. They will be able to take short notes and answer questions about what they heard, as well as write sentences to express their ideas.

ELI 013 Vocabulary Building:

By the end of this course, students will know basic vocabulary for topics such as introducing and describing yourself and people, classroom, time, weather, daily routine, clothes, house and furniture, food, sports and common activities. They will be able to apply this knowledge in speaking, listening, reading and writing.

ELI 014 Writing:

By the end of this course, students will be able to write basic paragraphs of up to 100 words describing themselves and others, routines & activities, places, jobs, and past events. They will be able to organize a paragraph in a standard format, with a topic sentence, paragraph unity, and time and space order signal words. They will be able to use basic verb tenses and nouns, simple and compound sentence structure, and capitalization and punctuation.
