Employee Assistance & Counseling Center

The UAB Employee Assistance & Counseling Center offers UAB, UAB Medicine and Viva Health employees, and members of their immediate household, up to 15 sessions each of counseling and professional life coaching services.

Life Coaching sessions will typically run up to 30 minutes. These sessions can occur in person at the EACC, online using Zoom teleconferencing software, or over the telephone. The Coach and Client will establish how the sessions will take place during the initial intake. As the focus for these services is different from EACC counseling services, use the guide below to determine what would be most beneficial for you at this time.

Life Coaching vs. Counseling

It is in the client's best interest to not participate in life coaching and counseling simultaneously.

What is Counseling?

  • Counseling helps clients explore and understand their world and discover better ways of thinking and living.
  • Counseling addresses emotional issues, past experiences, and focuses on healing.
  • Counseling is beneficial for issues such as depression, anxiety, substance abuse, relationship challenges, etc.
  • Counseling confronts and often challenges the client’s internal belief system.
  • Counseling is a process that can last longer than life coaching.

What is Life Coaching?

  • Life coaching incorporates collaboration between coach and client to achieve identified goals. These goals can be in areas such as work performance, weight loss, time management and organization, or any area of life in which you are seeking greater success.
  • Life coaching is strengths-based and focuses on skill building, planning, and personal development.
  • Life coaching is focused in the present and is forward-looking, assuming a positive view of the future, and is intended to help you succeed.
  • Life coaching creates movement and change, which is supported through goal setting and accountability check-ins.
  • Life coaching helps clients identify challenges, and turn those challenges into victories.
  • Life coaching is action oriented and focused on results.
