About the Program
Our program offers a robust learning experience for fellows. Components of the two-year program include:
- Opportunity to earn a master's degree while completing the fellowship
- Longitudinal opportunities to learn from operative and non-operative sports medicine physicians
- Participation on medical team for SWEEP and FLOW programs
- Formalized learning of procedural and diagnostic ultrasound equipment
- Focus on lifestyle medicine, incuding exercise as medicine and nutrition along with their roles within a sports medicine patient population
- Hands-on and focused work with Division I and professional sports teams in Birmingham
Academics and Conferences
Our program provides a wide variety of regular and required didactics and educational sessions. The didactic curriculum is designed to increase the fellow’s knowledge base in all aspects of Sports & Exercise Medicine and to help prepare the fellow to sit for the Sports Medicine In-Training Examination and successfully obtain the Certificate of Added Qualification in Sports Medicine (CAQSM). Each week there is one half-day designated to the didactic curriculum of lectures and small-group discussions.
Visiting Electives for Residents
We offer and encourage interested residents to spend a two-week or one-month rotation with us here in Birmingham. These electives are limited, and therefore it is recommended you apply for these well in advance of the rotation.
We would also like to help develop an individualized learning plan for this rotation which will allow us to maximize this learning experience.
