Insights into rural health from AHEC's 2024 Primary Care Summit
The Alabama Statewide Area Health Education Centers (AHEC) are calling for final comments for strategy discussions aimed towards enhancing primary care delivery for the state. Over 70 attendees, representing 20 institutions from across Alabama, contributed to conversations about workforce shortages, rural and underserved care, and more, at the 2024 Primary Care Summit last Thursday.
Asif tapped for opening keynote at IOC World Conference on Prevention of Injury and Illness in Sport
Next month, Family and Community Medicine Department Chair Irfan Asif, M.D., will travel to the French Riviera to deliver the opening keynote for the 7th International Olympic Committee World Conference on Prevention of Injury and Illness in Sport. Asif will kick off the event alongside his colleague and mentor Jonathan Drezner, M.D., with the session, "From Marginalized to Centralized: The Future of Sport Illness and Injury Prevention Research.”
Department of Family and Community Medicine receives $16 million in HRSA funding for new Center for Excellence in Primary Care
With new grant funding from the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA), the UAB Department of Family and Community Medicine will launch a Center for Excellence in Primary Care. It will grow and build on existing programs to recruit, train, and retain medical students interested in pursuing primary care in underserved areas.
47 primary care providers recognized for exceptional patient care
UAB Medicine is celebrating 47 primary care providers for their exceptional patient care this past fiscal year. Based on patient feedback collected from Medallia, a third-party experience management platform, these individuals scored an average of 95 percent or higher (n ≥ 30) in care satisfaction.

What to Know About Behavioral Health Care
May is Mental Health Awareness month and a good time to take a closer look at the primary care services that treat both mind and body.
In particular, our UAB Family and Community Medicine clinics offer behavioral health consultations and treatment. Though behavioral health care encompasses mental health care, there are some important distinctions. Behavioral health care providers typically collaborate closely with a patient’s primary care provider to help address health issues, including mental health concerns, in a medical or clinical setting. Specialty mental health providers may or may not collaborate directly with the patient’s medical team and may be housed either in a hospital or medical setting or in community mental health centers or private practices.

CU2RE Team Presents at STFM Annual Meeting
Faculty and students in the UAB Department of Family and Community Medicine's Comprehensive Urban Underserved and Rural Experience (CU2RE) program traveled to Tampa this week to present at the Society of Teachers of Family Medicine (STFM) Annual Meeting.
Designed to focus on opportunities and challenges in family medicine education, the conference attracts more than 1,500 family medicine professionals annually and includes more than 500 educational and interactive seminars, lecture-discussions, papers, and poster presentations.
