Victoria Badia
Victoria is a dad joke slinging, new-music loving, cat-obsessed, former theater kid from the metro Detroit area. She always looks forward to being in the audience of any live show- from a concert to a ballet. Her friends come to her when they need a specially-curated event playlist or a deep belly laugh. She intends to pursue an academic career in hematology/oncology, and has personal interest in positive psychology, narrative medicine and LGBTQ+ advocacy.

Mathew Balette
Mathew was born in Buffalo, New York but grew up in Pensacola, Florida. He attended Florida State University for his undergraduate degree in Psychology and for medical school. Mathew is thrilled to be training at UAB where individuals from the Gulf Coast and his hometown are frequently referred for tertiary care. His primary career interests include Cardiology and Medical Education. Outside the hospital, Mathew enjoys many outdoor activities in his free time, including hiking, pickleball, and basketball.

Kyle Barron
I was born in Fremont, CA and, soon after, relocated to Sacramento, CA with my parents where I completed high school. Following graduation, I attended Centenary College of Louisiana where I played baseball for 4 years and majored in Biology and Biochemistry. I stayed in the Shreveport area for medical school, obtaining my medical degree from Louisiana State University Health Shreveport. I am ecstatic about moving to Birmingham, starting my residency in a new area of the South, and pursuing a fellowship in Cardiology. In my free time, I enjoy playing golf, hiking, watching motorsports, and spending time with family and friends.

Gabrielle Barthel
Gabrielle is from Farmington, MI. She has lived in Michigan for most of her life, attending Calvin College for undergrad and Wayne State University for medical school. After briefly living in Nashville, she discovered that the South felt like home and decided to explore further and pursue residency training outside of Michigan. She is very excited to begin her residency training at UAB, and is considering an academic career in general medicine or nephrology. Gabrielle enjoys spending her free time cooking, gardening, studying theology, and exploring local parks.

Pranav Bhargava
Pranav is from central Louisiana from the town of Alexandria. He did his undergraduate education at Tulane University in New Orleans followed by attending medical school in northern Louisiana. He most likely intends to pursue a fellowship in cardiology after residency but is still deciding. Outside of medicine, Pranav enjoys watching the New Orleans Saints, LSU football, and the Indian cricket team. He also enjoys cooking and eating a variety of different cuisines. He looks forward to traveling and exploring other countries in the future.

Andrew Cash
Andrew was born in Huntsville, AL. He attended UAB to earn undergraduate degrees in Neuroscience and Spanish and decided to stay in Birmingham for medical school as it had already become his home. His academic interests include hospital medicine, teaching and education, critical care, and hematology/oncology. He is ecstatic to continue living and training at UAB with his wife Lindsay Jenkins-Cash who is a pediatric genetics resident. Andrew is an extrovert who loves spending time with others, travelling to experience new places and cultures, cooking and experimenting with recipes, and spending the occasional lazy day watching tv or playing video games.

Dalton Caviness
Dalton was born in Memphis, TN, but spent most of his childhood moving between cities. He attended Freed-Hardeman University for his undergraduate studies, finishing with a degree in Biochemistry. He attended medical school at East Tennessee State University in Johnson City, TN. He is ecstatic to join the UAB family as he already has many friends and family in the Birmingham area. While his career plans remain undecided, he has developed a passion for medical education, addiction medicine, and Gastroenterology. Dalton enjoys spending quality time with his wife, newborn baby girl, and golden retriever. He also enjoys golf, hanging out with friends, and exploring the restaurant scene.

Zahara Chowdhury
Zahara was born in Hartford, CT and moved to Gainesville, FL when she was two years old. She grew up a gator fan and loved it so much that she stayed at the University of Florida for her undergraduate degree (Also where she met her husband!). She then moved to Jackson, MS for medical school. After medical school, she moved to Birmingham and is ecstatic to be doing her internal medicine residency here at UAB! During her free time, she enjoys exploring new restaurants, going on hikes and spending time with her friends, husband and her brand new puppy named Socks.

John Cooper
John was born and raised in Baton Rouge, LA. He attended The University of Alabama for his undergraduate degree in Chemical Engineering with a minor in Biology. He returned back to his home state and completed medical school at LSUHSC - New Orleans. He is excited to return to Alabama and to start his residency training at UAB. He plans to pursue a career in Gastroenterology. In his free time, he enjoys golfing, watching Alabama football, exploring Birmingham, and spending time with his wife.

Carter Edmunds
Carter was born in Knoxville, Tennessee. He wasn't the biggest fan of the Vols football program growing up, but he is ready to jump on the bandwagon now that they are great again. He studied Chemistry and Biochemistry at Furman University, Roll DIns, and went to Wake Forest for medical school. He intends to pursue either a career in GI or Pulm Crit Care but is very indecisive as a person, so time will tell. He loves to cook, given his mom cooks professionally and made him learn as a youngin how to, and loves to watch movies and tv shows at nauseam

Charlie Evers
Charlie was born in Birmingham, AL where he graduated from Vestavia Hills High School. He attended Auburn University where he majored in Agricultural Science. Before medical school, Charlie taught 8th grade science and coached high school baseball for 2 years in rural Mississippi through Teach For America. “UAB is a very special place to me, and I am very excited to continue my training in Birmingham and serve our population.†In his free time, Charlie likes to read, garden, hunt, fish, and cook.

Hareem Farooq
Hareem was born and raised in Lahore, Pakistan. Growing up, she volunteered at various charity organizations and loved connecting with people at a deeper level. Her love for giving back to the community translated into a passion for medicine, and took her to King Edward Medical University. She is thrilled to be starting her residency at UAB, where she will get to learn from some of the finest in the medical fraternity. During her time at UAB, Hareem is determined to become a competent physician who takes a holistic approach while taking care of patients. She is confident that the breadth of clinical exposure at UAB will provide her ample opportunities to find her own niche in medicine. When free, Hareem loves to spend time with friends and family, enjoys the calmness of nature, and reads and writes fiction.

Benjamin V. Flueckiger
Ben was born in Fort Wayne, Indiana. He attended Purdue University for his undergraduate degree before switching to rival school Indiana University for medical school. He hopes to pursue a career in pulmonary and critical care medicine and work in global health. Ben and his significant other, Hannah, are excited to move to Birmingham for their first time living outside of the Midwest and experience everything the city has to offer. Ben enjoys reading, cycling, making fermented foods, and exploring new restaurants with Hannah.

Grant Garrison
Grant was born and raised in Anderson, SC. He graduated from Clemson University with a degree in Economics before attending medical school at the University of South Carolina School of Medicine in Columbia, SC. He is excited to move to Birmingham and begin residency at UAB. His clinical interests include cardiology, gastroenterology, and hospital medicine. In his free time, Grant enjoys spending time with his wife and golden retriever, playing golf, going to breweries, and attending Clemson football games.

Akhilesh Gonuguntla
Although born in India, Akhilesh grew up almost entirely in the Metroplex. He moved back to India with his family where he finished high school and attended medical school at KMC Manipal. Akhilesh is stoked to return to the South for residency and hopes to pursue his interests in teaching and research via an academic career in cardiology. Outside of medicine, he enjoys going to the gym, rooting for Dallas sports teams, traveling to new places, and spending time with friends and family.

Madison Granger
Madison was born and raised in Newcastle, Oklahoma and has been a little bit of everywhere since. She attended undergrad at Oklahoma Baptist University before crossing the Red River to attend UT Southwestern in Dallas, TX for medical school. She is excited to be branching out to the Southeast for residency in Birmingham, and is currently interested in a career in either infectious diseases or as an academic hospitalist. In her free time Madison enjoys watching anything Star Wars, getting Vitamin D, reading, and learning new songs on the guitar.

Joseph Hakim
Joe was born in Los Angeles but completed all his education (from undergrad to med school) right here at UAB. He’s excited to stay for both residency and Hematology/Oncology fellowship through the ABIM Research Pathway. Outside of molecular genetics and bioinformatics, he loves running, writing music, and playing drums.

Maris Hardee
Maris was born and raised in Jackson, Mississippi. She studied biology and psychology at the University of Alabama before completing medical school at the University of Mississippi Medical Center. She is excited to join UAB for residency and serve the Birmingham community. While she is still considering a variety of specialties, her current academic interests include global health and quality end-of-life care. Maris loves spending her time with family and friends, traveling, trying new coffee shops, and building furniture.

Jennie Hamilton
Jennie grew up in Murfreesboro, Tennessee. She earned her bachelor's degree in Biology with a minor in Chemistry, followed by her master's degree studying the epidemiology of Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever, all at Middle Tennessee State University. She then completed her PhD in Immunology at the University of Alabama at Birmingham with publications in mechanisms of B cell tolerance loss in autoimmune disease. She received her medical degree at the University of Tennessee and is thrilled to be at UAB for Internal Medicine residency. In her free time, she enjoys spending time with family and friends, hiking nature trails, relaxing with classic movies and literature, and playing folk/classical guitar.

Joshua Henderson
Josh was born in Austell, Ga. He obtained a Bachelor’s of Science in Biology from Kennesaw State University before attending medical school at Morehouse School of Medicine. He is currently interested in interventional cardiology, critical care medicine, and resolving healthcare disparities. Outside of the hospital Josh enjoys rooting for UGA (GO DAWGS!!!), kayaking, watching any horror movie he can find, and exploring Birmingham’s food scene.

Syed Anas Hyder
Syed was born in Hyderabad, India and raised in Lawrenceville, GA. After majoring in Cell Biology & Biotechnology at Georgia Gwinnett College, he went on to obtain his medical degree at Medical College of Georgia in Athens, GA. Syed is thrilled to train at UAB for Internal Medicine and explore what Birmingham has to offer. After residency, he intends to pursue a career in Cardiovascular Disease, possibly with a focus in Adult Congenital Cardiology. Outside of medicine, Syed enjoys exploring local cuisines, going on road trips, and staying fit through Orange Theory and hiking.

Shrikar Iragavarapu
Born in Santa Clara, California, Shrikar has also lived in Texas, Georgia, Missouri, and Alabama, as well as spending all of elementary and some of middle school in India. After finishing middle school and high school in California and Georgia, he received his undergraduate degree in Computational Biology and Genomics at Washington University in St. Louis in 2019. He then went on to complete his medical school training at University of South Alabama College of Medicine. He is interested in pursuing a future career in cardiology. In his spare time, he enjoys cooking, spending time with friends and family, playing tennis with friends, working out, playing video games, and trying to catch up on a huge and ever-growing backlog of TV shows and movies.

Jack LaForge
Jack was born and raised in New Orleans, Louisiana. He spent his undergraduate years at Spring Hill College in Mobile, Alabama where he played NCAA soccer for four years and earned a Bachelor of Science in Biology. After graduation Jack attended medical school at LSU Health Shreveport. He is excited to continue his medical training at UAB and experience life in Birmingham. He is undecided on his long-term career plans, but he is interested in cardiology and critical care medicine. Outside of medicine he enjoys sports and the outdoors particularly fishing, hunting, hiking, and watching the New Orleans Saints.

Daniel Langteau
Daniel was born and raised in New Orleans, Louisiana. He attended Louisiana State University (Geaux Tigers) for his undergraduate degree in Biology before completing medical school at Louisiana State University in New Orleans near his family. He is excited to start his residency at UAB and to experience the outdoors Birmingham has to offer. In his free time, Daniel enjoys running, hiking, traveling, golf, his sports teams, and hanging out with his family and friends.

Trevor McClure
Trevor was born on Langley Air Force Base in Virginia. A few short years later he moved to Georgia where he grew up in the small town of Greenville. He attended the University of Georgia for undergrad and decided to stay in Georgia for medical school, attending Mercer university. He is excited to get started in the Internal Medicine program at UAB, with the hopes of pursuing a fellowship in Cardiology. He is looking forward to exploring the food and drink scene with his wife Rachel and their dog Finn. Outside of medicine, he enjoys watching sports, reading, and is still trying to get the hang of tennis.

William Mudd
William was born and raised in Atlanta, GA. At the University of Georgia, he majored in Genetics and is a huge Bulldogs fan. GO DAWGS! After UGA, he attended medical school at the Medical College of Georgia in Augusta. William is thrilled to join the UAB family for his internal medicine training and enjoyed the people and culture at UAB as well as the wonderful food scene and outdoor activities offered by Birmingham. He is interested in medical education and intends to pursue a career in hematology/oncology. Outside of work, William enjoys cooking, cheering on his GA bulldogs and Atlanta Braves, exploring new restaurants, watching movies, and spending time outdoors.

Michael Patterson
Michael was born in Hattiesburg, MS. His initial exposure to life in Alabama occurred during his undergraduate studies at the University of Alabama, where he met some great friends and enjoyed some amazing football teams. He then went back to Mississippi for medical school but is thrilled to return to Alabama for residency in Birmingham at UAB. He is fascinated by many aspects of internal medicine but ultimately, at this time, is planning on pursuing specialty training in fellowship following residency (specialty to-be-determined). In his spare time, Michael enjoys watching and playing sports of all kinds and exploring through Birmingham with his friends.

Lexi was born in Loveland, CO, however she lived in 8 different states growing up. She received her undergraduate degree in Biology and Spanish from The University of Alabama- Roll Tide! She attended medical school at the University of Central Florida and is thrilled to return to Alabama for her residency training at UAB. She is undecided on fellowship plans, however she is excited to pursue her interests in medical education and global health. In her free time she enjoys spending time outdoors with her husband, Brian, visiting her family at the beach and going for runs to explore the city.

Moses was born in Florida and grew up in Jordan. He moved back to the US to start college. He completed his undergraduate education at Emory University and Georgia Tech earning degrees in Applied Mathematics and Biomedical Engineering. He earned his medical degree from the Medical College of Georgia. He is excited to join UAB and explore what Birmingham has to offer. He plans on pursuing a career in cardiology. Outside of medicine, he likes to play soccer, spend time with family and friends, and travel.

Hamid Shirwany
Born in Memphis and raised in Germantown, TN, Hamid attended Rhodes College, graduating with a B.A. in International Studies & History and a B.S. in Biochemistry & Molecular Biology. He then completed medical school at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center. A lifelong Memphian, he finally migrated from his hometown to Birmingham and is excited to train at UAB for residency, after which he hopes to pursue a career in cardiology. Outside of medicine, he enjoys reading, photography, and soccer — in particular, he is passionate about Arsenal F.C. and the Brazil national team.

Sahana was born in Edison, NJ and spent most of her childhood in upstate New York. After high school she moved to Kansas City where she attended the University of Missouri-Kansas City for both undergrad and medical school. She is excited to continue her training at UAB for Internal Medicine and hopes to eventually pursue a fellowship in Hematology-Oncology! In her spare time Sahana enjoys spending time with family and friends, watching football (Go Chiefs!!), listening to true crime podcasts, baking, and reading.

Dan Stephens
Growing up, Dan lived in various parts of the US but considers Savannah, GA home. After completing his undergraduate degree in Exercise Science and Health at the University of Idaho, he went on to obtain his medical degree from the University of Washington School of Medicine. He is very excited to be returning back to the southeast to continue his training at UAB where he can be closer to family. He hopes to pursue an academic career in cardiology or hospital medicine. In his spare time, he enjoys spending time with his wife, watching Georgia football, going to the gym, and exploring new restaurants in town.

David hails from all over the country, having lived in southern California, Louisiana, and Ohio, and he is also very proud of his Hungarian heritage. He attended LSU in New Orleans for medical school after completing his undergrad degree at The Ohio State University (Go Bucks!) and is super excited for residency training at UAB. He is currently undecided about pursuing general medicine or specializing, but his passion for missions and academic medicine are sure to play a part in his future career. Maryo Toma
Maryo was born in Alexandria, Egypt and came to the US at a young age where he was raised in Nashville, TN. His love of serving others through his church community and his interest in science inspired him to pursue a career in medicine. He attended undergrad at TTU in Cookeville, TN, and majored in Chemistry. From there, he traveled west to Memphis, TN where he went to The University of Tennessee Health Science Center for medical school. After so many years in school, he is excited to start his residency training at UAB! He is interested in serving the underserved, and a career in hospital vs general medicine. In his free time, he enjoys reading, jogging, hiking, and spending time with family and friends.

Anurag Tripathy
Anurag was born in India and spent his childhood in Mumbai, India; Cambridge, UK; Arlington, MA; Idaho Falls, ID and Salt Lake City, UT. He attended the University of Utah, completed a BS/MS dual degree in Biomedical Engineering with a minor in Chemistry, and stayed there for medical school. He is excited to continue his medical training at UAB, continuing his passion for travelling and living in new places. More specifically, he hopes to pursue a fellowship in cardiology or gastroenterology with an emphasis in translational biomedical research in these areas. In his spare time, he enjoys spending time with friends and family, hiking, rock climbing, camping, gaming, biking, trying new restaurants, and making Spotify playlists.

Patrick was born and raised in Nashville, TN. After completing his undergraduate degree in bioengineering at Clemson, he went on to obtain his medical degree at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center College of Medicine in Memphis, TN. He is excited to have matched at UAB for internal medicine and to continue his training in Birmingham. He hopes to pursue a career in hematology/oncology or hospital medicine. Ryan grew up in Huntsville, AL. He came to UAB for undergrad and stayed for medical school (Go Blazers!). He is ecstatic to continue his residency training at UAB. His academic interests include cardiology, mechanical circulatory support, POCUS, and medical education. In his spare time, Ryan enjoys cooking with friends, improving at pickleball, and traveling.
