Donovon Allen
Donovon was born in Omaha, Nebraska. After high school, he attended the University of Nebraska-Lincoln where he majored in Psychology. He then obtained his master’s in Medical Anatomy and medical degree from the University of Nebraska Medical Center. He is excited to start residency at UAB and currently has an interest in cardiology and hospital medicine. In his spare time, he enjoys cheering for the New Orleans Saints, watching movies, trying out new restaurants, and exploring the outdoors.

Lauren Anderson
Lauren grew up in Golden, Colorado and attended University of Colorado Denver for college. She attended Saint Louis University for medical school and is thrilled moving to Birmingham for residency. She is interested in a career in pulmonary and critical care and is passionate about ending healthcare disparities. In her free time, she loves cooking, reading, running and yoga.

Sydney Blankenship
Sydney grew up in Dothan, AL and attended Auburn University (War Eagle!) where she majored in biomedical sciences and minored in English. She attended UAB for medical school and is very excited to stay in Birmingham for residency. Sydney is currently undecided on fellowship plans, but she is looking forward to learning more about all fields of internal medicine. Outside of medicine, Sydney enjoys traveling, hiking, and exploring new places with friends!

Garrett Bourne
Growing up, Garrett moved every two-three years resulting in a childhood spent scattered across the United States in addition to two years spent in Belgium during high school. He attended Brigham Young University for his undergraduate degree in Biochemistry before completing medical school at Dell Medical School at The University of Texas at Austin. Garrett couldn’t be more excited to continue his medical training here at UAB. After residency, Garrett hopes to pursue a career in hematology/oncology. In his free time, Garrett enjoys running, reading fantasy novels and spending time with his wife and their new baby.

Sarah E. Bowman
Sarah was born and raised in Fort Myers, FL. She first came to Birmingham for her undergraduate education at Birmingham-Southern College where she earned a degree in Chemistry with a minor in Mathematics. She returned to Florida for her medical degree at Florida State University College of Medicine. She is excited to be back in Birmingham for her training in internal medicine! She has a variety of clinical interests that include gastroenterology, cardiology, and lifestyle medicine. In her free time, she enjoys hiking, reading, and exploring the Birmingham restaurant scene.

Sarah Cagle
Sarah grew up in the small Cajun town of Gray, Louisiana. She attended The University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa for undergrad before returning home for medical school at Louisiana State University in New Orleans. Sarah is thrilled to be back in Alabama to continue her medical training at UAB. Currently, she hopes to pursue a career in hospice and palliative medicine. In her free time, Sarah loves to bake and to cook. She also enjoys hiking, and is an avid reader and bookstore frequenter.

Malcolm B. Chapman
Malcolm was born and raised in Jacksonville, Florida. He attended the University of Central Florida, graduating with an undergraduate degree in Biomedical Sciences. After working in aging research at the NIH in Baltimore, he moved to North Carolina to pursue a dual-degree in medicine and business at UNC in Chapel Hill. Malcolm is elated to be moving to Birmingham with his wife, Adrianna, where they will complete their respective residencies in Internal Medicine and Obstetrics & Gynecology. Within medicine, he plans to pursue a career in Gastroenterology and Hepatology. Beyond medicine, Malcolm loves to explore new food destinations, travel domestically and internationally, take in history and culture of his surroundings, and make playlists for every occasion.

Scott Clanton II
Scott was born in Dunwoody, GA and grew up in Forsyth, GA. He attended Emory University where he studied biology and music. Scott returned to medical school close to home at Mercer University School of Medicine in Macon, GA and is now exicted to attend UAB for internal medicine. His primary interests include hematology/oncology, critical care, or hospital medicine. In his spare time, he can be found playing guitar, doing any sort of outdoor activity, or hanging out with his dog Elsie.

Caitlyn Cloy
Caitlyn grew up in the small town of Brownwood, Texas. She received her B.S. in Nursing from Hardin-Simmons University in Abilene, TX and worked as a nurse for 2 years before medical school. She attended medical school at Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center in Lubbock and Amarillo, Tx. After learning about the wonderful training and culture at UAB, Caitlyn knew she wanted to venture to Alabama for residency! Her interests include women’s health, acute care, and medical education. Caitlyn enjoys perusing farmers markets and thrift shops (with a sweet tea in hand), listening to music, hiking, and traveling. Caitlyn and her pup Darcy look forward to making new friends and exploring Birmingham!

Denver James Crumpler
Denver grew up in Mobile, AL and attended Spring Hill College where he graduated with a degree in Nursing. He worked as a critical care nurse before deciding to pursue medicine. He attended medical school at the UAB Heersink School of Medicine and is thrilled to continue his training here at UAB. His career interests include cardiology and oncology. Outside of medicine, he enjoys cooking, soccer, and spending time with his wife, Jenny, his daughter, Adelaide, and their dog, Devo.

Melissa Downey
Melissa was born in Atlanta during the 1996 Olympics, but grew up in Kennesaw, GA. After high school, she attended the University of Georgia where she obtained degrees in Biology and Cellular Biology. Subsequently, she completed her medical degree at the Medical College of Georgia. Melissa is thrilled to join the UAB residency program and explore her interests in Infectious Disease and Endocrinology. Outside of medicine, she enjoys running, hiking, spending time with her family, and watching the Real Housewives.

Emily C. Harrison
Emily is originally from Birmingham and is excited to be continuing her time here for residency! She attended college at Rhodes College in Memphis, TN before coming back to Birmingham for medical school. She is overall undecided about a specialty, but is interested in general academic medicine or critical care. In her spare time, Emily loves reading, making and eating pasta, and hanging out with her husband, Miller, and their cat, Frances.

Aaron Landis
Aaron was born in Florence, AL. He ventured to Birmingham, AL for his undergraduate degree in neuroscience and decided to stick around for medical school. He is thrilled to continue his residency training in Birmingham. His academic interests include cardiology, hospital medicine, and quality improvement. In his spare time, Aaron enjoys going to the gym, listening to music, and playing tennis.

Atul Lodh
Atul was born in India and grew up in Kennesaw, Georgia. He majored in Genetics and Psychology at the University of Georgia and is an avid Bulldogs fan (Go Dawgs!). Afterwards, he received his medical degree at the Medical College of Georgia. He is very excited to join the UAB family for his residency training, as he appreciates their strong focus on medical education. He intends to pursue a career in academic medicine and is currently leaning towards hospital medicine. In his free time, he enjoys hiking, playing video games, watching sports, and spending time with his fiancée and friends.

Michael McCalman
Michael was born and raised in Andalusia, AL. After completing his undergraduate degree in Biomedical Sciences at Auburn University in 2018, he went on to obtain his medical degree at UAB School of Medicine in Birmingham, AL. He is very excited to be staying in Birmingham and continuing his training at UAB. He hopes to pursue a career in gastroenterology or hospital medicine. In his free time, Michael enjoys spending time with friends and family, watching sports, golfing, and reading.

Richardo A. Marin Tamayo
Ricardo was born and raised in Lima, Peru, and attended medical school there as well. He is passionate about medical education and has worked on various activities related to this field at his alma mater over the past few years. Ricardo is thrilled to begin his residency at UAB, where he will join the residents, fellows and faculty he met during previous rotations as a visiting medical student. Though he is looking to pursue a career in Cardiology or Nephrology, he would like to first explore everything Internal Medicine comprises. In his spare time, Ricardo enjoys swimming, baking cheesecakes, working out, and spending time with friends and family. He is a huge fan of Marvel films and Harry Potter, and his favorite food is sushi.

David Maynard
David grew up in Nashville, TN and stayed there for his undergraduate education at Vanderbilt University (Anchor Down!). He then moved to Memphis for medical school at University of Tennessee Health Science Center. He is excited to be moving to Birmingham to continue his medical career at UAB. He is still undecided on his career path but is interested in hospital medicine and teaching. In his free time, he enjoys watching and playing sports, hiking, traveling, and playing board games.

Kate McCarty
Raised in Atlanta, Georgia, Kate received her undergraduate degree in Biology and Spanish from the University of Georgia. She attended medical school at the Medical College of Georgia and is thrilled to be joining the UAB family for residency. While she is currently focused on general internal medicine, she remains open-minded about future career paths and has a particular interest in combating health disparities. Outside of the hospital, Kate enjoys hiking, running, traveling, and trying new restaurants!

Vibhu Parcha
Originally from Dehradun, India, Vibhu has spent nearly all years of his education in the foothills of the Himalayas. While UAB is the farthest he has been from the mountains, he is very excited to pursue his residency and fellowship training at UAB. He is eager to train as a physician-scientist with a focus on cardiovascular genomics. In his free-time, he loves to play soccer, run to the Vulcan Park, practice his stand-up comedy material, and binge-watch Netflix.

Katie Parks
Katie was born and raised in Slidell, LA. She attended Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge, LA for undergrad and continued her love for the Tigers by attending Louisiana State University in New Orleans for medical school. She is thrilled to be moving to another state for her residency training and experience everything Birmingham has to offer. Afterwards, she intends to pursue a career in Hematology/Oncology. In her free time, she enjoys exercising, listening to podcasts, trying new restaurants, and hanging out with friends, family, and especially her pups.

Meet Patel
Meet was born in Kalol, Gujarat in India but grew up in Calhoun, a small town in Northwest Georgia in the Appalachia foothills. He attended the University of Georgia, stumbling across his newfound passion for Georgia football (Go Dawgs!). He continued his journey towards medicine at Mercer University school of medicine in Savannah, Ga where he met his girlfriend, Kristin. She will be beginning her residency in orthopaedics at Campbell Clinic in Memphis, TN. He knew UAB IM was home after recognizing the culture of clinical excellence without ego. Moving forward, Meet intends to pursue a career in cardiology with an emphasis on medical education. In his spare time, he enjoys binge watching movies/Netflix, exploring the local food scene, traveling, attending car shows, and spending time with friends and family.

Shefali T. Patel
Shefali was born and raised in Lakeland, Florida. She attended Florida State University for both her undergraduate education and medical school (Go 'Noles!). During her years in medical school, Shefali developed a keen interest in leadership, mentorship, and research. She is beyond thrilled to continue exploring her passions and to train in Internal Medicine here at UAB. Shefali hopes to pursue a career in either Gastroenterology or Hematology-Oncology, and she is very excited to see where her journey takes her! In her free time, Shefali enjoys spending time with family and friends, reading mystery novels, listening to true crime podcasts, cooking with her Instant Pot, and watching Star Trek.

Ethan Pollack
Ethan was born in St. Petersburg, Florida but grew up in the rolling hills of East TN. As the youngest of three brothers, he decided to follow in their footsteps and attend the University of Tennessee for undergraduate where he studied kinesiology and nutrition. Since he couldn’t get enough of Rocky Top & the Volunteer Spirit, he completed medical school at The University of Tennessee Health Science Center. He is thrilled to join the UAB family and hopes to pursue a career in gastroenterology or hospital medicine. In his free time, Ethan is an outdoor and adventure enthusiast spending time on his mountain bike, skiing, or hiking alongside his wife, Victoria, and their golden retriever, Teddy.

David Lewis Pottinger
David grew up in Bardstown, Kentucky, the eldest of five siblings. He attended college at Baylor University in Texas, then came back to Kentucky to study medicine at UK, and is now thrilled to start a new chapter at UAB. He is tentatively planning on sub-specializing in Hematology/Oncology, but hasn’t definitively decided yet. In his free time, his interests include reading about American history, jogging, eating at sushi restaurants, and attending USFL games in beautiful downtown Birmingham.

Christopher A. Price
Chris was born in Meridian, MS and attended The University of Alabama where he studied Chemical Engineering. He fell in love with medicine through shadowing and volunteer opportunities and attended medical school at University of Mississippi Medical Center. Chris is excited to continue his residency training at UAB and enjoy everything Birmingham has to offer. He hopes to one day pursue a future career in gastroenterology. In his free time, you can find Chris spending time with family and friends or catching a game at Bryant-Denny Stadium.

Thomas Ruli, Jr.
Thomas was born and raised in Mandeville, LA, a suburb of New Orleans. He attended undergraduate at Spring Hill College in Mobile, AL, where he earned a B.S. in Biology. He then returned to his home state to attend medical school at LSUHSC - New Orleans. Thomas is excited to return to Alabama to start his residency at UAB; he intends to pursue a career in Pulmonary/Critical Care or Gastroenterology. In his free time, Thomas enjoys spending time with his wife, golfing, cooking, and watching sports (especially his beloved LSU Tigers).

Ryan Salazar
Ryan was born in Madison, AL. He spent both undergrad and medical school at UAB and is thrilled to be staying for residency! He's undecided on what his plans are after residency, but his current career interests include hospital medicine and cardiology. During his free time, he enjoys hiking the local trails and trying out different restaurants, bars, and breweries that Birmingham has to offer.

Ahmed Saleh
Ahmed was born in Southampton, England shortly before he and his family immigrated to the US. He grew up in rural Kentucky and later completed his undegrad at the University of Kentucky followed by medical school at the University of Louisville. Although he is grateful for his time in the Bluegrass State, he is eagar to serve and learn from the UAB community. He intends to pursue an academic career in cardiology. In his free time he enjoys traveling, exploring parks and restaurants in the city, being outdoors, and watching Liverpool matches with his family.

Griffin Selch
Griffin was born in rural Indiana. He attended Purdue University for undergraduate studies, before switching over to their rival Indiana University for medical school. Despite this betrayal, he still roots for the Boilermakers. He has hopes of pursuing a career in pulmonary and critical care medicine. Griffin, along with his significant other and their 90-pound Great Pyrenees, are thrilled to be moving to The Magic City. Their first time living outside of Indiana (and the Midwest), they are excited to explore Birmingham’s hiking, restaurants, record stores and coffee shops. In his free time, Griffin likes to run, read novels, watch movies, explore the outdoors and act as a very amateur home cook.

Ashlyn was born and raised in Hokes Bluff, AL. She attended the University of Alabama where she obtained a bachelor’s degree in Biology and a master’s in Human Environmental Science with a specialization in Rural Health. She attended medical school at UAB and is excited to continue her training here in Birmingham for residency. She is interested in hospital medicine, cardiology, and medical education. Outside of medicine, Ashlyn enjoys spending time with her family and friends, trying out local shops and restaurants, and exploring the beautiful hiking trails throughout Alabama.

Charles Sutherland
Charles grew up in Mobile, AL before attending Auburn University for his undergraduate degree in Biomedical Sciences. He then crossed the state to UAB for medical school and had such an incredible experience that he wanted to stay for residency. He is unsure as to what his future academic career may hold, but he enjoys primary care, cardiology, and rheumatology. He is proud of his gulf coast roots and is an avid Saints football fan. In his free time, he enjoys cooking, fishing, SEC football, and playing with his dog, Finnley.

Kais Tounsi
Kais Tounsi was born in Bloomington, Indiana and grew up in Michigan, Northern Virginia, Canada, and Tunisia. After completing his Genomics and Molecular Genetics degree at Michigan State University, he headed south for the first time to attend University of Alabama Birmingham for his medical degree. He is excited to stay at UAB and pursue his interests in Cardiology and health equity. Outside the hospital, Kais enjoys spending time with his wife Ashna and dog Koda, as well as trying unique cuisines from all over the world.

Joven Tristeza
Joven was born in Flowood, Mississippi. He then moved to the Philippines where he was raised by his aunt and grandma. Joven came back to the United States at the age of 4. He went to Mississippi College for undergraduate where he majored in both Biology and Psychology. He obtained his medical degree from Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center in New Orleans. Joven is extremely excited to start his internal medicine residency at UAB and see where it leads him. In his spare time, Joven enjoys watching anime, reading books, catching a soccer game, and celebrating a big win in his video games.

Greg was born and raised in Connecticut. He graduated from Ithaca College in Upstate New York and then attended medical school at the University of Connecticut. He is thrilled to continue his training at UAB and experience life in a new region of the country after living in the Northeast. His career interests include academic medicine and fellowship training in nephrology or infectious disease. Outside of medicine, he enjoys hobbies involving music and spending time with his wife and their two dogs.

Katie was born and raised in western Kentucky. She attended the University of Kentucky where she completed her undergraduate studies in Chemistry and earned her MD (Go cats!). She is so excited to continue her training in Alabama and hopes to pursue a career in Pulmonary Critical Care Medicine or hospital medicine. In her free time, she enjoys hiking and camping with her fiance, running, reading fiction, and enjoying local restaurants and breweries!

Daniel Weintraub
Dan grew up in the Midwest and spent most of his early years in Iowa City, Iowa. He is an Oberlin College alumnus with a BA in History. Dan earned an MS from Durham University in the UK before matriculating to the Medical College of Georgia for medical school. He fell in love with UAB after interviewing and visiting the city of Birmingham with its many great restaurants, breweries, and outdoor activities. He is undecided about his ultimate career path but has interests in nephrology, critical care, and hospital medicine. In his free time, he enjoys disc golf, hiking, intramural sports, and walking his dog Daisy.

Alexander Yang
Alexander was born in Columbia, South Carolina but has mostly lived in Michigan. He is thrilled to come back to the South for not only residency but gastrointestinal fellowship and postdoctoral research through the ABIM Research Pathway. Outside of fatty liver disease and lipid metabolism, his passions are exercising, cooking, and gaming.
