Becoming a Department of Neurosurgery pre-heath student observer is an opportunity for individuals who are interested in a career in neurosurgery to shadow a medical staff or workforce member and learn more about the field. An observership experience also allows you to build a relationship with a mentor in the field and ask questions, ultimately helping you to decide if this path is the right one for you.
The following steps are required to initiate a UAB Medicine Observership request:
-
1. Complete all required documentation.
Review and complete all required documentation, verification and training as stated by the UAB Physician Scientist Development Office here. Completion of these steps is required prior to scheduling an observership experience in the Department of Neurosurgery. Please read and follow the instructions carefully.
-
2. Submit completed and verified documentation.
Once the requirements outlined by the UAB Physician Scientist Development Office have been obtained and completed, the items listed below should be submitted here for compliance review and approval.
- Completed observership packet
- Employee Health clearance
- Preferred faculty observership sponsor
-
3. What’s next?
Once you have completed the above-mentioned steps, the Department of Neurosurgery sponsor you wish to observe will review your submission along with the observership coordinator. Please note that there is no guarantee of placement once the application process is complete.
Observership placement is dependent on sponsor availability and the successful completion of all pre-observership requirements.
If your request is approved, someone from the department will contact you for scheduling.
