Shah named director of clinical research for department

Associate Professor Ashish Shah, M.D., has been named the director of clinical research for the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, as part of a recent round of appointments following the decision to name Steven Theiss, M.D., the department’s first-ever chair.
Shah has expressed interest in streamlining the process by which clinical trials are evaluated, approved and conducted and said he is also looking into improving the department’s infrastructure by hiring more staff to assist in trial management.
“UAB research has a solid foundation and immense potential,” Shah said. “I am humbled to have the opportunity to continue to work with my colleagues in this new role as we strive to reach it to the fullest.”
Gilbert department’s new executive vice chair

Dr. Shawn R. Gilbert, M.D.
Professor Shawn Gilbert, M.D., was recently named the department’s new executive vice chair. Gilbert is one among several UAB Orthopaedic Surgery faculty who is taking on a new position within the department following the appointment of Steven Theiss, M.D., who was named chair of the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery in February after serving as interim department chair since November 2017.

Match Day 2017 ushered in a new group of surgery residents, while saying goodbye to others who will soon leave UAB for different programs across the country.
According to the UAB Heersink School of Medicine Office of Graduate Medical Education, 220 medical students from 63 U.S. universities and 27 international universities will join UAB as residents in 2017.
