Overview
The Breast Pathology Service provides diagnostic expertise in the interpretation of both benign and malignant breast diseases from various specimen types, including needle core biopsies, lumpectomies, and mastectomies. The service covers UAB Hospital (an 1190-bed tertiary care medical center) and its satellite clinics as well as out outreach programs including local breast surgical oncology practice and breast imaging center. UAB Surgical Pathology laboratory performs approximately 50,000 evaluations per year, of which ~4000 are breast specimens. The breast pathology team also provides comprehensive expert consultation service for breast pathology. Our pathologists also provide interpretation of biomarkers for breast cancer, including estrogen receptor, progesterone receptor, and HER2. The UAB Breast Health Center, a leader in the diagnosis and treatment of both benign breast disease and breast cancer, has earned full accreditation by the National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers (NAPBC). In 2015, the UAB Breast Health Center received a Women's Choice Award, being named one of America's Best Breast Centers.
The Breast Pathology team participates in a number of weekly or monthly multidisciplinary conferences, including Radiology-Pathology correlation conference and multidisciplinary breast tumor board. Resident and fellow education is also an essential component of this service. UAB offers a one-year fellowship in diagnostic Breast/GYN Pathology. A Breast Pathology-focused Surgical Pathology fellowship training is also available. The fellows from UAB Breast Oncology Fellowship also rotate in breast pathology. Our fellows also participate in clinical research projects during the fellowship, and presentation at national meetings is strongly encouraged.
