Biography

A seasoned surgeon with years of academic and clinical experience, Dr. Gongora completed his medical training at the Universidad del Rosario in Bogota, Colombia. He then continued his training with a residency in general surgery and a surgical critical care fellowship at the Medstar Washington Hospital Center/Georgetown University Hospital program in Washington, D.C. Later, Dr. Gongora completed formal training in cardiothoracic surgery at the prestigious Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, where he was named administrative chief resident. He then completed subspecialty training in adult cardiac surgery and thoracic transplantation and mechanical support at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center.

Dr. Gongora was the founder and director of the adult heart transplantation, mechanical circulatory support and ECMO programs at Memorial Healthcare System, in Hollywood, Florida. He previously worked as the surgical director for heart transplantation and ventricular assist devices at Hahnemann University Hospital/Drexel University College of Medicine and as director of thoracic transplantation and mechanical circulatory support at Texas A&M Health Science Center College of Medicine/Scott & White Clinic.
