UAB has been selected to host the 2017 Annual Meeting of the Society of Asian Academic Surgeons (SAAS), which will be held Sept. 21-22, 2017. The UAB Department of Surgery is proud to host this meeting, which will be the second SAAS Annual Meeting held. The Society was founded in 2011 to focus on the personal and professional development of Asian academic surgeons with the belief that the best way to increase Asian representation in the leadership of academic surgery is to prepare future generations to succeed. Jayleen Grams, MD,PhD, is the local organizing member and Herb Chen, MD, Chair of the UAB Department of Surgery, is a founding member of SAAS.

The inaugural Kirby I. Bland, M.D., Lectureship was held on Feb. 9th, 2016. That evening the department held a dinner in honor of Dr. Bland. 

More than 100 people attended to celebrate Dr. Bland's contribution to the UAB Department of Surgery, specifically highlighting his passion for education. The current chief residents expressed their heart-felt gratitude for Dr. Bland saying he has "had an incredible, invaluable, and meaningful impact on their lives as surgeons and as people." 

The UAB Department of Surgery was well-represented at the 11th Annual Academic Surgical Congress, sponsored by the Association for Academic Surgeons and the Society of University Surgeons, held in Jacksonville, Fla., Feb. 2 to Feb. 4, 2016. 

Children’s of Alabama has named Mike Chen, M.D., chief of surgery. As chief of surgery, Chen will lead one of the largest pediatric surgical services in the country. He said he wants to continue to improve the quality of care and expand the scope of surgical services, and he looks forward to improving the patient care experience for children and families who need surgical services at Children's of Alabama.
