Two faculty members named to endowed chairs
- Greg Kennedy, M.D., Ph.D., was named to the John H. Blue Endowed Chair of General Surgery, which was established in 2001.
- Elizabeth Beierle, M.D., is the first holder of the Charles D. McCrary Endowed Chair in Pediatric Surgery. Dr. Beierle is also the first female surgeon to be named to an endowed chair.
Beierle selected as one of 2016 Women Who Shape the State
Pediatric surgeon Elizabeth Beierle, M.D., was selected as one of 2016 Women Who Shape the State by Al.com. More than 100 women were nominated and 29 women were selected for the second annual presentation of this award, which seeks to honor women throughout Alabama. From the UAB School of Medicine, Mona Fouad, M.D., was also honored.

UAB Department of Surgery will host the Inaugural Frank G. Moody Lectureship on October 11, 2016, at 7am in Margaret Cameron Spain Auditorium. Frank G. Moody, M.D., served as UAB’s first Division Director of Gastrointestinal Surgery from 1966-1971. This lectureship was created in memory of Dr. Moody, who passed away on August 12, 2016.

UAB has been selected to host the 2018 Annual Meeting of the Society of Black Academic Surgeons (SBAS). The meeting will be held April 26-29, 2018, and Stephen Gray, MD, and Colin Martin, MD, Carlton Young, MD, are the organizing members. The UAB Department of Surgery is proud to host this meeting, which is designed to stimulate academic excellence among its members by providing a forum of scholarship in collaboration with the leading departments of surgery in the U.S. The Society was founded in 1989 against the backdrop of a paucity of African-American surgeons in academic medicine and the absence of an organized network of African-American surgeons to stimulate, mentor and inspire young surgeons and medical students to pursue academic careers.

UAB Selected to Host 2017 SAAS Annual Meeting
UAB has been selected to host the 2017 Annual Meeting of the Society of Asian Academic Surgeons (SAAS), which will be held Sept. 21-22, 2017. The UAB Department of Surgery is proud to host this meeting, which will be the second SAAS Annual Meeting held. The Society was founded in 2011 to focus on the personal and professional development of Asian academic surgeons with the belief that the best way to increase Asian representation in the leadership of academic surgery is to prepare future generations to succeed. Jayleen Grams, MD,PhD, is the local organizing member and Herb Chen, MD, Chair of the UAB Department of Surgery, is a founding member of SAAS.
Dinner to honor Kirby I. Bland, M.D.
The inaugural Kirby I. Bland, M.D., Lectureship was held on Feb. 9th, 2016. That evening the department held a dinner in honor of Dr. Bland.
More than 100 people attended to celebrate Dr. Bland's contribution to the UAB Department of Surgery, specifically highlighting his passion for education. The current chief residents expressed their heart-felt gratitude for Dr. Bland saying he has "had an incredible, invaluable, and meaningful impact on their lives as surgeons and as people."
