35 years ago, a 5-year-old boy received a life-changing operation

retro art stream Joaquin Aldrete, M.D., led the team that performed the first liver transplant at University Hospital. In May of this past year, UAB’s Comprehensive Transplant Institute celebrated its 50th anniversary and a record of more than 14,000 organ transplants.

Joe Appleton, Ph.D., founding dean of UAB’s School of Engineering, died Jan. 17. The school was created in 1971, two years after UAB became an independent university in 1969, and Appleton helmed the school until 1978.
