Schedule an Appointment
The first step in scheduling an appointment with Student Counseling Services is setting up an Initial Phone Consultation by web-booking through your patient portal, calling our office at 205-934-5816, or accessing your portal through the B Well UAB App. If you feel this is an urgent matter that cannot wait until a scheduled phone screening or you are rescheduling an appointment, please call us at 205-934-5816 during business hours.
Please choose your appointment carefully as failing to show or canceling may lead to delays in care. Counseling is a confidential service and the phone screening should only be accessed by the individual who intends to receive services. There are limits to confidentiality when we are concerned about the imminent wellbeing of an individual or in the cases of reported child endangerment/abuse.
Initial Phone Consultations are only available for currently enrolled students.
If you are a faculty/staff member, please connect with the UAB Employee Assistance and Counseling Center. SCS services are for UAB students only.

1. What happens when we call you for your Initial Phone Consultation?
What happens when we call you for your Initial Phone Consultation?
The initial phone consultation is comprehensive in nature and covers numerous areas related to your overall wellbeing. You will talk with a counselor over the phone for about 15-20 minutes. The counselor will ask you for information about you and your concerns. It’s important for you to share as much as you can so we can provide you with clinical recommendations tailored to your needs. The questions may be of a sensitive nature, so you will need to be in a private and confidential location. Additionally, counseling appointments may not take place while you are driving, as your safety is our utmost concern. If you need to reschedule your appointment, you may cancel through the patient portal and reschedule for a different time.
If you are referred for individual counseling with an SCS counselor, you may or not be matched with the counselor you spoke with over the phone. Within your first couple of sessions, you and your counselor will determine the type and amount of counseling that will best assist you.

What if I am returning for services?
If you are returning to SCS for services and it has been more than 12 months since your last appointment, you should schedule an Initial Phone Consultation.
If you have attended an appointment with a counselor at SCS within the past 12 months and you wish to continue with your previous therapist, you do not need to go through the Initial Phone Consultation process again. Instead, you may contact the office (205-934-5816) and request your previous therapist.
If you wish to request a new therapist, please make this request with your current therapist when possible. If that is not possible, then you may schedule an Initial Phone Consultation to request a new placement.
