Lister Hill Lecture

Mary Lynne Capilouto, D.M.D., S.M, Dean Emeritus, delivers the annual Lister Hill Lecture

Dr. Capilouto served as Dean of UAB School of Dentistry from 1997 to 2004. Under her leadership, the school excelled in research, education, and service. Among numerous initiatives during her tenure, the school established a community outreach program to provide care to populations in underserved areas, received national awards for minority faculty development, and significantly increased clinical and research revenues. During her tenure, fund-raising efforts enabled the school to undergo a major renovation to transform UAB's dental program into a state-of-the-art facility for clinical care, teaching and research. After retiring from the University of Alabama at Birmingham in 2005, Dr. Capilouto engaged in part-time teaching and dental practice and immersed herself in community work, including serving as President of Board for The Women’s Fund of Greater Birmingham. In 2011, Dr. Capilouto moved to Kentucky when her husband, Dr. Eli Capilouto, who is also a graduate of the UAB SOD, was named the President of the University of Kentucky. In addition to her responsibilities in her role as the spouse of
the UK President, Dr. Capilouto has served on the State of Kentucky’s Commission of Women, the Lexington Public Library Foundation Board, the Leadership Council of the UK Women and Philanthropy Network, and currently serves as a member of the City of Lexington’s Town Branch Park Board of Directors.

Dr. Capilouto received her Bachelor of Science degree, magna cum laude, from Samford University in 1973, and received her D.M.D. degree with honors as well as the prestigious Dean’s Medal from the University of Alabama School of Dentistry at Birmingham in 1977. In 1985, Dr. Capilouto received an Oral Epidemiology Fellowship (1985-88) at the Harvard School of Dental Medicine. While at Harvard, Dr. Capilouto earned a Master of Science degree in epidemiology from the Harvard School of Public Health, completed a dental public health residency, and was awarded the James M.
