Admission

If you wish to pursue Teacher Certification, you must apply and be admitted to the UAB Teacher Education Program (TEP). Students who have completed all necessary prerequisites, typically in their sophomore or junior year, can apply.

Admissions requirements vary by program (please see below). Additionally, you should discuss the TEP application requirements with your School of Education and Human Sciences advisor, e.g., specific courses, minimum GPA, testing, and application dates.

    • Requirements

      Course and GPA Requirements

      • Completion of the following Professional Studies courses with a minimum GPA of 2.75 or higher. Any course with a grade below “C” must be retaken.
        • EHS 125 Step 1: Inquiry Approaches to Teaching
        • EHS 126 Step 2: Inquiry-Based Lesson Design
        • EHS 325 Knowing and Learning in Science and Mathematics
      • Grade of at least one “B” and one “C” in EH 101 and EH 102
      • Minimum 2.50 GPA in teaching field courses
      • Grade of “C” or better in all teaching field courses
      • Completion of 9 hours of teaching field courses
      • Minimum cumulative GPA of 2.75

      Testing Requirements and Background Clearance

      • Score of “Pass” on all three parts of the AECTP Basic Skills Assessment.
      • Background check status shown as “cleared” on ALSDE Certification Portal

      Other Requirements

      • Evidence of writing proficiency as documented by passing score on writing sample in EHS 325 or at TEP interview or “B” or higher in EHS 325
      • Passing score on spontaneous speaking sample in TEP interview
      • Evidence of the dispositions needed to be a successful teacher

    All UAB Teacher Education Programs (TEP) are accredited by the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE) and approved by the Alabama State Board of Education.

    Students are allowed only two attempts to apply to a program. The application withdrawal deadline is one week after the application deadline for the Teacher Education Program.


    Deadlines for Admission to the Undergraduate Teacher Education Program

    Application for admission to the Undergraduate Teacher Education Program occurs after admission to UAB and after completing a series of required courses.

    Deadlines for Early Childhood and Elementary Education, English Language Arts, General Social Science, Music - Choral and Instrumental

    The application window opens 30 days before the deadline. For example, if the deadline is March 1, the window will open on February 1.
