Major: Civil Engineering
The Department of Civil, Construction, and Environmental Engineering offers a broad-based major in civil engineering. The program covers:
- mechanics and structures,
- soils,
- surveying,
- transportation,
- water resources,
- environmental engineering, and
- construction engineering management.
Computer applications are emphasized in all areas.
Designed to Prepare You for a Career
Our goal is to prepare students for entry into the civil engineering profession as design engineers. The program is based on a strong foundation of mathematics, physical sciences, humanities, and social sciences and is supported by a series of basic courses from other engineering disciplines. It is accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission (EAC) of ABET.

Major Requirements
Full course requirements, admissions information, course descriptions, and a suggested four-year plan of study for the major can be found in the UAB Undergraduate Catalog.
Electives in the academic program may be selected from courses in structural engineering, construction engineering management, environmental engineering, geotechnical engineering, and transportation engineering. These courses allow you to emphasize a particular area in your studies. Wise selection of these electives may be used as additional preparation for a specific design career or for entry into a specialized civil engineering certificate or engineering graduate program — if you have a specific goal in mind, ask the program faculty members or your advisor for advice on how to tailor your classes.
