Student Groups
Student groups are a great way to connect with your classmates, get involved in the civil engineering profession, and be active in your community. UAB civil engineering student groups participate in outreach activities at local schools, help the needy in our community, and participate in competitions with civil engineering students from other universities.
American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE - Student Chapter)
ASCE students are active in a wide range of activities throughout the year. They participate in engineering competitions with other universities, such as designing and racing a concrete canoe. They reach out to students in middle and high schools to teach them about engineering careers. And they donate their engineering skills to civic causes such as constructing homes for Habitat for Humanity or building an exhibit at the Birmingham Zoo. Institute for Transportation Engineers (ITE – Student Chapter)
The purpose of the UAB Institute of Transportation Engineers Student Chapter is to promote the advancement of transportation and traffic engineering by fostering the close association of students with the transportation and traffic engineering profession.
Each year, the UAB ITE student chapter organizes and participates in a number professional development and service activities including field trips, guest speaker seminars, fundraising, recruitment events, and awards competitions. Service activities include STEM outreach to local schools. The group fields a team for the annual “Traffic Bowl” competition, which tests their knowledge of transportation engineering against teams from other universities. Society of Women Engineers (SWE)
The Society of Women Engineers (SWE) is a not-for-profit educational and service organization. SWE is the driving force that establishes engineering as a highly desirable career aspiration for women. SWE empowers women to succeed and advance in those aspirations and be recognized for their life-changing contributions and achievements as engineers and leaders. Among their many outreach activities, the UAB SWE chapter brings local middle and high school girls to campus to meet women engineers and learn about engineering careers.
