Dr. Steinmetz works as a postdoctoral research fellow in the Materials Science and Engineering department. He studies the directional solidification of ternary eutectic alloys, especially in the system aluminum-copper-silver. Due to his experience in computational engineering, gained during his PhD, and his background in material science he further focuses on the quantitative analysis of the resulting microstructures.

Before joining UAB in October 2017, Dr. Steinmetz investigated the directional solidification of ternary eutectic alloys with large-scale phase-field simulations at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology, Germany in cooperation with the German Aerospace Center (DLR) in Cologne, Germany. As part of the cooperation with DLR he gained experience in visualizing the microstructure with synchrotron tomography at the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility (ESRF) in Grenoble, France and the analysis of the resulting large data sets.
