In 2022, UAB Eye Care opened 2 eye care clinics in the 1917 space. These clinics (Monday pm and Wednesday am) provide patients with easier access to care and allows more continuity of care. HIV/AIDS can affect the eyes in a myriad of different ways from the front to the back of the eye and many of these conditions are asymptomatic in early stages. This patient population is at risk for comorbidities such as hypertension and diabetes as well. Early detection and management of these diseases provides a much better prognosis than if they are caught later.
In addition, current Optometry students also benefit immensely from this experience. It allows them to experience managing unique eye conditions that are not often seen in the general population. They also have the benefit of seeing how eye care fits into a multidisciplinary setting. Students working in the 1917 Eye Clinic are required to go through specific training on the effects of HIV/AIDS on the eyes as well as EHR training specific to the clinic.
