The one-year, CAST-accredited Endoscopic Endovascular Fellowship at the University of Alabama at Birmingham offers comprehensive subspecialty training in endovascular neurosurgery.
The program closely adheres to the Society of Neurological Surgeons' curriculum for subspecialty training fellowships in endovascular neurosurgery, providing fellows exposure to a diverse range of advanced surgical techniques and innovative treatments.
Why Choose UAB?
As Alabama’s largest academic medical center and one of the largest in the United States, UAB draws a high-volume, complex patient population from across the Southeast. The Endoscopic Endovascular Fellowship is structured to ensure that fellows gain expertise in cutting-edge procedures while working alongside nationally recognized leaders in the field.
Endovascular Neurosurgery
UAB’s endovascular neurosurgery clinical service is one of the busiest in the region, performing more than 1,000 neurointerventional cases annually, including pediatric procedures.
As home to Alabama’s first Comprehensive Stroke Center, certified by the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association and The Joint Commission, UAB treats over 1,800 stroke cases each year, giving fellows exposure to some of the most complex and urgent neurovascular conditions.
Fellows train in an environment rich with expertise, as UAB has more board-certified vascular neurologists, neurointensivists, and endovascular and vascular neurosurgeons than any other hospital in the state. This allows fellows to learn from top experts in the field while gaining hands-on experience with the full spectrum of endovascular neurosurgical interventions.
From diagnostic angiograms and coiling/embolization procedures to stenting and advanced neurovascular treatments, fellows are actively involved in every aspect of patient care, ensuring a comprehensive, high-volume training experience.
Fellowship Structure
Fellows will train primarily at UAB under the direction of Mark Harrigan, M.D., with additional training at Children’s of Alabama and the Birmingham VA Medical Center.
Responsibilities will include:
- Participate in the adult endovascular and cerebrovascular service
- Take emergency call
- Manage a clinical service
- See patients in a clinical setting
- Participate in cerebrovascular and stroke conferences
- Mentor neurosurgery residents and contribute to their education in neurointervention
In addition to their clinical duties, fellows will have the opportunity to participate in research projects in endovascular neurosurgery, allowing them to contribute to ongoing advancements in the field.
Upon completing the program, fellows will be issued a certificate by the UAB Department of Neurosurgery.
