The one-year Radiosurgery Fellowship at the University of Alabama at Birmingham offers comprehensive subspecialty training in stereotactic radiosurgery.

The program provides fellows exposure to a diverse range of advanced surgical techniques and innovative treatments in stereotactic radiosurgery for all neurosurgical indications.

Fellows will also gain significant exposure to radiation oncology as well as translational and/or basic science research in radiosurgery-related areas.

Radiosurgery

Fellows will gain significant exposure to clinical decision-making, operative planning, and post-radiosurgical care across a wide range of conditions, including tumors, vascular malformations, spinal disorders, pediatric cases, and functional neurosurgery.

Fellows train under experienced neurosurgery and radiation oncology faculty, receiving mentorship in radiosurgical techniques, patient management and academic research. The collaborative environment ensures fellows develop expertise in the latest advancements in radiosurgery, preparing them for leadership roles in the field.

Institutional Resources and Technology

UAB offers state-of-the-art radiosurgical technology and facilities, providing fellows with exposure to the latest in stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS) and stereotactic body radiation therapy (SBRT). Fellows work alongside a multidisciplinary team to deliver cutting-edge treatment options for complex neurosurgical cases.

Fellowship Structure

Fellows will train primarily at UAB under the direction of Nicole Bentley, M.D.

Clinical responsibilities will include:

  • Participate in radiosurgical training
  • Provide general neurosurgical care through clinics
  • Manage a clinical service
  • Participate in pre-radiosurgical decision-making, operative planning, and post-radiosurgical care

As part of a neurosurgery instructorship, fellows will:

  • Assume a faculty instructor position within the Department of Neurosurgery
  • Take general neurosurgical call
  • Mentor neurosurgery residents and supervise their clinical and surgical activities
  • Participate in the didactic education of neurosurgery residents
  • Attend and participate in didactic general and subspecialty conferences
  • Attend and participate in one of the Department of Radiation Oncology’s training sessions in SRS and SBRT
  • Complete the equivalent of dedicated research time, either concurrent with clinical duties or separately
  • Submit at least two manuscripts for publication

In addition to their clinical duties, fellows will have the opportunity to collaborate with Neurosurgery and Radiation Oncology faculty to conduct and publish research, allowing them to contribute to ongoing advancements in the field.
