The UAB NF Clinic team is committed to providing personalized care for patients and families affected by NF with comprehensive diagnostic evaluations, follow-up care, genetic counseling, and access to promising new treatments.
Diagnostic evaluations include a comprehensive physical exam, detailed review of medical history, and imaging studies when needed, including:
- Computerized tomography (CT)
- Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)
- Positron emission tomography (PET) – MRI or PET-CT
Our genetic counselors provide consultations to patients about the genetic implications of NF for affected individuals and family members. These experienced professionals can assist patients with the following: explain testing options available and discuss the benefits and limits of genetic testing; interpret and explain the results of a genetic test; and provide information about prenatal and pre-implantation genetic diagnosis.
Follow-up care typically includes clinic visits annually, or more frequently if needed. Patients and families who have questions or concerns between visits are encouraged to call the clinic’s nurse practitioner or contact the clinic using the UAB Patient Portal; questions are reviewed daily and answered within 24 hours.
As the Coordinating Center for the NF Clinical Trials Consortium, we provide our adult and pediatric patients access to promising, leading edge-treatments through participation in clinical trials for all forms of NF.
