As part of the new performance review process launched this past year in all campus schools and units, managers and their teams were encouraged to set professional and personal goals for each employee for fiscal year 2021, which runs from Oct. 1, 2020 to Sept. 30, 2021.
Now, more than three months into FY21, it is time to ask the question: How are you doing on your goals?
Managers and employees across UAB are encouraged to have quarterly performance check-ins this year. This is especially important during these challenging times, when people need connections, support and feedback. During these check-ins, employee and manager should review the employee’s development goals and progress made toward those goals. The next step is to reassess and, if necessary, make a plan to achieve the goals.
During this quarterly check-in, managers also should provide each employee an update on their performance thus far in FY21. That is, are they not meeting expectations, meeting expectations, exceeding expectations or somewhere in between? It is important to clarify expectations about job performance as well, through questions such as:
- Describe your job role and expectations; where do you need more clarity?
- How clear are you on your top priorities? Where do you need more clarity?
- What successes have you had?
- What are your challenges?
- What can I do to better support you?
- Where do you need help?
