UAB Student Counseling Services and the Collegiate Recovery Community provide a variety of mental health prevention and education programs to the UAB campus community. These workshops help build your resiliency skills, increase your knowledge and skills for helping other who may be struggling with mental health concerns, and many other topics.

QPR Suicide Gatekeeper Certification for Students
This 90-minute workshop equips participants with a practical intervention model that can be used to provide life-saving crisis support to students who may be considering suicide.

Mental Health First Aid Workshop for Students
This full-day in-depth workshop teaches participants common signs and symptoms of mental health and substance use challenges, how to interact with a person in crisis, and connect them with help, and additional information on trauma, substance use, and self-care. After completing a 2-hour, self-paced online course, attendees participate in a 5- to 6-hour Instructor-led training in person.

This 15 – 20 minute Overview of Services presentation provides students with an overview and demonstration of the many mental health resources available to them for free at UAB, including how to schedule an appointment and how to access the free digital mental health tools.

This 50 minute workshop teaches students about resiliency provides participants with tools and a framework to build and grow personal resilience.

This 50-to-90-minute workshop engages students in focusing on the multiple and unique aspects of college life that can significantly influence overall wellbeing and college success. Best practices for wellness are identified and explored.

Mental Health Advocate Certificate Information Session
This information session provides students who want to know how to visibly show their support for student mental health at UAB with information about the 3-level UAB Mental Health Advocate certificate program. Participants will learn about the UAB Cares Suicide Prevention Initiative, the purpose of the Mental Health Advocate Program, requirements for each level of certification, and benefits of participating in the certification.
This is a 20 minute in person workshop. May also be available as a live virtual session.

Naloxone Training and Overdose Prevention Awareness
This training provides participants with key information about opioid overdose prevention. Topics include signs of a potential opioid overdose, best practices for intervention, and how to administer the overdose reversal medication naloxone (sometimes branded as Narcan). All participants will receive a kit containing two doses of naloxone, instructions for its use, and information about resources for substance use intervention and recovery.
This is a 15-minute, in person training. A 30-minute version, including more information about opioid overdose trends, is also available.

Responding to Students in Distress Live Workshop for Faculty-Staff
"Responding to Students in Distress" is an introductory workshop that provides participants with skills and strategies to recognize student mental health concerns, respond to a student in distress, and how to connect students to resources. Participants will learn how to apply the REALLY approach to responding to students and specific resources to support students in distress.

Course Design with Mental Health in Mind Live Workshop for Faculty-Staff
“Course Design with Mental Health in Mind” provides faculty and staff who teach students with actionable strategies to support student mental health through course design and teaching strategies. Using the STEPS framework, faculty will take away recommendations for supportive messaging, training, embedding mental health, policy considerations, and recommendations for course settings.

Collegiate Substance Use and Student Support Live Workshop for Faculty-Staff
The question of how to support students struggling with substance use has long been a source of concern among higher education professionals. Peer socialization around substances, along with long-standing cultural messaging about the college experience, prevents students from recognizing or acknowledging potential substance use concerns. Social stigma around substance use disorder is also a barrier to students seeking support or improving their relationship to substances. This seminar focuses on the realities of substance use as a widespread community health concern, establishing open and honest dialogues with students about substances, and how to create recovery-ready communities that meet the unique needs of UAB students.

Mental Health First Aid Live Workshop for Faculty/Staff
Mental Health First Aid for Higher Education teaches you how to identify, understand and respond to signs of mental illnesses and substance use disorders. This 8-hour training — which focuses on the unique experiences and needs of college students — gives you the skills you need to reach out and provide initial support to someone who may be developing a mental health or substance use problem and help connect them to the appropriate care. Participants will receive a free Mental Health First Aid training manual (valued at $20) and will receive a certification through the National Council on Behavioral Health. Blazers Bounce Back Canvas Resiliency Course for Students
Every enrolled UAB student is assigned the Blazers Bounce Back course in Canvas. The course is focused on stress management, resiliency skills, and the support services available to students at UAB. Supporting Student Mental Health through Teaching and Advising Resource Course
This course serves as a resource hub for faculty, advisors, staff, graduate assistants, and any others at UAB who engage with students. The course is voluntary and self-directed. Videos, resources, handouts, links, and strategies are provided so you have the tools you need to recognize mental health concerns, respond to students who may have mental health concerns, and refer them to the appropriate resources for help and support.
