History of the Department of Mathematics
Since its start in 1969, UAB has emerged as one of the major research universities in the country, classified as under Research Universities I by Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education. Since its inception, the university has grown rapidly and has played a major part in the development of the City of Birmingham over the last 35 years.
During these years of rapid growth of UAB, the Department of Mathematics experienced dramatic improvements as well.
- 1970s: It was only in 1970 that the B.S. and M.S. degrees were first offered. During the 1970s new faculty were hired and a push for research strength began with the established undergraduate and the young graduate programs.
- 1980s: After negotiations starting in 1985, the department received the right from the Alabama Commission on Higher Education and the Board of Trustees for the University of Alabama system to offer the Ph.D. degree starting in August of 1988.
- 1990s: The first Ph.D. from the UAB Department of Mathematics was awarded to Robert Wallace in 1993. Since then over 30 degrees have been granted.
You can explore a complete list of our graduates in the People section of the website.
Conferences
A series of international conferences in differential equations and mathematical physics have played a major role in the development of the department. The first UAB International Conference on Differential Equations and Mathematical Physics was held in March, 1981, organized by Ian Knowles and Roger Lewis. This was the beginning of an ongoing series of conferences held in 1981, 1983, 1986, 1990, 1992, 1994, 1997, 1999, 2002, and 2005. In the 1990s the conference was a joint series with the School of Mathematics at Georgia Institute of Technology, where the conference was held in 1992 and 1997.
Research and Funding
In 1986 the department received an NSF EPSCoR in Alabama award for the period 1986-1991 in order to enhance the competitiveness of mathematics research at UAB. Roger Lewis was the PI for this award. This support of approximately $1.25 million played a prominent role in accelerating the growth of mathematics research. Louis Dale was the PI for awards from the NSF for the Alliance for Minority Participation. By 1991 these awards amounted to $15 million support for minority students in the area. Dale was also the PI for an NSF award of $5 million for “The Alliance for Graduate Education and the Professoriate,” which began in 1996. Lex Oversteegen was the PI for an NSF award of $2.3 million for the period 2004-2009 for “A Broad Based Program to Produce Mathematics Professionals”? which supported undergraduate and graduate students in the Department. Peter O’Neil, now Professor Emeritus, wrote the major portion of the proposal.
Research has always been an important part in the life of the Department of Mathematics, even before the first NSF research award in 1980. Today, all regular graduate faculty members are active in research. Presently there are ongoing seminars in mathematical physics, nonlinear analysis, relativity theory, p.d.e. and geometry, and topological dynamics. Faculty members have won university awards for teaching and for scholarly distinction as well as a Fulbright Foundation Lecture and Research Award. Some have served as NSF panelists or on editorial boards for journals such as Annales of Henri Poincare, Journal of Statistical Physics, Journal of Computational Analysis and Applications, Communications on Applied Nonlinear Analysis, Empire of Mathematics, ORSA Journal on Computing, and IEEE Transactions on Fuzzy Systems.
Leadership at UAB and Beyond
Six faculty members have served as Department Chair:
- Arthur C. Segal (1969-71, 1975-78)
- Richard J. Crittenden (1971-75)
- Peter V. O'Neil (1978-82) (Professor Emeritus)
- Roger T. Lewis (1984-87, 1997-2001) (Professor Emeritus)
- Lex G. Oversteegen (1987-97)
- Rudi Weikard (2001-present)
Louis Dale served as interim Chair during the period 1982-84.
Two faculty members have served in the upper administration of the university. Peter O'Neil was the Provost of UAB from 1997-2000 and the Dean of the School of Natural Sciences and Mathematics from 1982-1997. Louis Dale was associate dean of the School of Natural Sciences and Mathematics from 1981-91. From 1991-95 he was associate vice president for Academic Affairs before assuming the role of associate vice provost for Minority and Special Programs. He was appointed to the new position of vice president for Equity and Diversity in 2003.
Roger Lewis served as a Program Director for Analysis at the National Science Foundation Division of Mathematical Sciences in Arlington, VA, from 2001-2003. The team consisted of members from Australia, Austria, China, Congo, Germany, Hungary, Israel, Japan, the Netherlands, Russia, and the USA. The wide variety of experiences and expertise of this internationally known group strengthened our mathematics programs.
Our Students
Many UAB undergraduate students of mathematics have chosen to continue their graduate work at UAB, while others have continued their studies at Auburn University, Brown University, Georgia Institute of Technology, Harvard University, Princeton University, Stanford University, the University of Florida, the University of Georgia, the University of Pennsylvania, the University of Tennessee, and the University of Wisconsin-Madison —where they have studied engineering, law, mathematics, medicine, and meteorology.
Students graduating with their Ph.D. from the UAB Department of Mathematics have a variety of opportunities available to them. Dr. Robert Sims (2001) held an NSF post-doctoral position at Princeton University for the years 2002-2004. Recent UAB students have received offers for positions at the University of Arizona, UC-Davis, UC-Irvine, Cardiff University (U.K.), Cornell University, the University of Fribourg (Switzerland), the University of Illinois (U-C), the University of Missouri-Columbia, the University of New Orleans, Northwestern University, and Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. Others have received offers from four-year schools. One Ph.D. graduate continued his studies at the University of Pennsylvania School of Law and works as a patent lawyer in New York City. Some students have received lucrative offers from industry — Raytheon Corp. in Alexandria, VA; William Wecker Associates, Inc., Novato, CA; and Imaging Business Machines, LLC, Birmingham; to name a few.

Welcome to Mathematics
Mathematics has been a human endeavor for millennia. It has always been driven by two sources: the intrinsic beauty of numbers, shapes, and structures on the one hand and the necessity to solve practical problems in fields as diverse as atomic physics, computed tomography, and finance on the other.
Accordingly, Mathematics, in its various facets, plays an important role for a large number of disciplines, and it is our mission at UAB to impart our students with the mathematical knowledge required in their respective fields. With a 5,000-year history, Mathematics is assumed by many people to be complete. New challenges are constantly posed within mathematics and from our increasingly technological society — our faculty is devoted to advancing knowledge in our field, as well as engaging our students in learning and applying mathematics in the pursuit of their goals
To achieve our mission, we offer degree programs on the Bachelor's, the Master's, and the doctoral level as well as a wide variety of courses for all students at UAB.
Undergraduate Programs
In addition to the traditional Mathematics major, we offer two concentrations:
- The Applied Mathematics and Scientific Computation track is designed for students who desire a strong connection with mathematical applications in the physical sciences, computer science, medicine and the biosciences, engineering, business, and elsewhere.
- The Mathematical Reasoning track is designed to develop a deeper level of understanding of mathematical thinking and mathematical ideas, understanding the role of inquiry and reflection in learning mathematics, and developing the ability to communicate mathematics to audiences at different levels. In particular, this track is appropriate for students interested in pursuing certification in mathematics at the middle school level.
For students pursuing other majors but who would like to continue their studies in Mathematics, we also offer a minor.
Mathematics Fast-Track Program
The Mathematics Fast-Track Program offers a deeper involvement with our subject. It allows a mathematics major can earn both a BS degree and an MS degree in mathematics in four to five years. Each individual Fast-Track student works with a mentor from the graduate faculty on a mathematics research project during every term. Students will usually begin taking graduate mathematics courses after the third year and are automatically admitted to the graduate program in the fourth year, if performing satisfactorily. Those who complete this program will be prepared for continued graduate work in mathematics and the sciences, or for careers in industry or government.
Graduate programs
The Department of Mathematics offers graduate programs of study leading to the M.S. degree in Mathematics or the Ph.D. in Applied Mathematics. In both programs we train students in mathematical rigor and the development of mathematical communication skills. The M.S. program prepares students not only for Ph.D. programs (at UAB or elsewhere) or a career in secondary or junior college level teaching but it also provides good preparation for students who go into business, industry, or government. In the past our students have been very successful in obtaining employment in such careers.
The Ph.D. program prepares students interested in an academic career in a university or a college as well as students interested in a career in business, industry, or government. We emphasize the importance of the applications by requiring a minor (four courses in a field outside mathematics, e.g., physics, computer science, or biostatistics), enhancing our graduates' competitiveness in the job market.
Research
Recognizing the cohesiveness of all branches of mathematics, we are particularly interested in the connections between pure mathematics and its applications. Our faculty specializes in the following fields:
- Differential Equations and Mathematical Physics
- Differential Geometry and Geometric Analysis
- Dynamical Systems and Ergodic Theory
- Numerical Analysis
- Probability and Statistics
- Topology (especially continuum theory)
