The horizontal navigation is the primary means of navigating for your users. It is essential that you setup the site structure in a logical cohesive manner so that users can quickly and easily find information.
Each root item in your horizontal menu can either lead directly to a page or link or can open a dropdown menu, but cannot do both. This is different from how menus worked in the previous version of Joomla so it may be necessary to slightly adjust your menu structure.

No Dropdowns
With Headings
In this example, the dropdown menus contain headings. A heading can either not linked anywhere or link to a page. To create a non-linked dropdown menu heading, use the "Page Heading" menu item. To create a linked dropdown menu heading, create a joomla menu item as usual. Once you add child items to this joomla menu item, it will automatically receive the page heading styling.
With External Links
The external link icon is automatically added to URL menu items when open in a new window is selected. Hidden copy is added to the link for accessibility reasons alerting the user the link opens a new website. The link does not open a new window because that can be disorienting for users and impairs the ability to go back to previous pages using the back button.
