Who should complete this course?
The Laboratory Safety Workshop is designed to offer an in-depth review of laboratory safety practices, UAB Policies, and Procedures, regulatory compliance, as well as legal and liability issues to Laboratory Managers, Supervisors, and Science Educators. UAB’s Department of Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) will provide in-depth discussions and hands-on training on biosafety, chemical safety, hazardous waste, emergency response, use and maintenance of equipment, and Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
It is strongly recommended you complete one or more of the following before completing this workshop:
- Basic Biosafety
- Chemical Safety
- Hazardous Waste Handling and Packing
- Medical Waste Handling
- Personal Protective Equipment
- Biosafety Cabinets and Fume Hoods

Course Objectives:
After this workshop, participants will be able to:
- Conduct a risk assessment to determine the correct PPE, equipment, or emergency responses for working with biological materials or hazardous chemicals.
- Handle, pack, and manifest biological or hazardous waste correctly.
- Set-up and maintain a successful Satellite Accumulation Area.
- Develop a Standard Operating Procedure (SOP), Chemical Hygiene Plan (CHP), and Lab Safety Plan to prepare the lab for safety reviews.
