Mentorship
Mentorship
‘New to UAB’ departmental advisors
Each new faculty will be assigned a faculty advisor that will act as their initial mentor who can show them the ropes, help them navigate through the maze of new systems, and answer any questions. This will significantly benefit incoming faculty by accelerating onboarding, encourage sharing knowledge and tips, providing general support, facilitating engagement, identifying new leaders, and establishing comradery amongst friends and colleagues. The department is always looking for faculty volunteers to assist in this mentorship program - it is a great peer-mentoring opportunity for Assistant and Associate Professors.
Contact Dr. Shannon Bailey, Vice Chair of Faculty Affairs, (shannonbailey@uabmc.edu) if you are interested in helping your new colleagues get off to a great start at UAB.

Faculty Mentoring Committee
The Department of Pathology is committed to the professional development and career success of faculty in all academic pathways. All faculty members at the rank of Assistant Professor (tenure earning & non-tenure earning) or Clinical Assistant Professor are expected to establish a mentoring committee within 6-9 months of their initial faculty appointment. The mentoring committee will serve until promotion of the faculty to the rank of Associate/Clinical Associate Professor; however, mentoring committees may also be beneficial to faculty members at the rank of Associate/Clinical Associate Professor or higher. The mentoring committee will advise and provide individualized guidance and consultation to assist with the academic career development and success of a faculty member in the Department of Pathology.

Pathology Faculty Grants Group
The Department of Pathology Faculty Grants Group (FGG) was established to provide feedback to faculty on their grant ideas and/or specific aims pages. The FGG will foster peer mentoring within the Department of Pathology, assisting colleagues improve their grants ideas and chances for funding. Feedback may also include help in setting benchmarks, priorities, and timelines for grant submissions. Another benefit will be to advance and cultivate collaborations within the department. This is NOT a forum for reading/editing entire grant applications. Further, the FGG will focus on faculty grant applications; e.g., NIH R, K, DOD, foundation, etc. types of awards.
Faculty presenters will submit their Specific Aims page to PFGG organizer(s) one week prior to their presentation for distribution to participants.
Contact Dr. Shannon Bailey, Vice Chair of Faculty Affairs, (shannonbailey@uabmc.edu) if you are interested in participating.

Promotion and Tenure
Promotion and Tenure
From the UAB Heersink School of Medicine Faculty Handbook. Section 5.3. Heersink SOM Promotion Standards:
“Faculty member contributions to activities in the areas of research, teaching, and service are evaluated for promotion and the award of tenure. All faculty members are expected to be engaged in scholarly activities that support the areas of research, teaching, and service in ways that are consistent with their unique roles and faculty promotion tracks. Further, to attain promotion or the award of tenure, faculty are expected to demonstrate sustained excellence in the mission areas appropriate to their professional roles. For faculty in the TE and NTE tracks, this excellence is closely related to scholarship that includes national peer review of other scholars. Faculty in the Academic Clinician Track are also expected to demonstrate excellence as evaluated by their local peers. Individuals being promoted in the TE track are expected to demonstrate excellence in at least two areas designated in the TE track; those being promoted in the NTE track and Academic Clinician Track are expected to demonstrate excellence in any one area designated in their respective tracks (see Table A in the handbook). While promotion is based upon achieving excellence in two or one area(s), all faculty members are encouraged to contribute to other mission areas of the Heersink SOM.” Please see the UAB HSOM Faculty Handbook provides more details on promotion standards for all tracks and ranks.
Departmental Pre-review of Promotion & Tenure Materials
The Department of Pathology Appointment, Promotion, and Tenure (APT) Committee pre-reviews promotion and tenure materials to provide early feedback to faculty, assisting them in preparing a high-quality packet of their application materials. Pre-Review is not intended to provide a decided outcome indication on behalf of the Department of Pathology Appointment, Promotion, and Tenure (APT) Committee or UAB HSOM faculty council, instead it is only meant to offer a preliminary assessment. Please be aware that submission of P&T pre-review packets to the departmental APT is mandatory for faculty considering promotion and/or tenure. Deadline for submission: July 1.
