The Biosafety Program at UAB provides the following services:
- Development and implementation of Biosafety and Biosecurity training
curricula:
- Basic Biosafety
- Bloodborne Pathogen Training
- Shipping with Dry Ice, shipping biological materials, infectious
agents, and transgenic organisms - Biosafety Level 3 access, work, security, and incident response
- Risk assessments for:
- Infectious agents (human, animal, plant pathogens)
- Invasive plants and organisms
- Genetically modified agents or organisms
- Consult with faculty, staff, and administrators on:
- Workplace practices and procedures for work with recombinant
DNA/RNA (rDNA/RNA), invasive, or infectious materials - Engineering controls – purchase or use of biological safety
cabinets (BSC), safety centrifuges, and other primary containment
devices - Appropriate facilities and PPE necessary for the scope of work
- Review lab renovation and construction plans for BSL2 and BSL3
containment facilities - Import and export control permits
- Lab-specific Biosafety Plans
- Workplace practices and procedures for work with recombinant
- Emergency Preparedness:
- Emerging pathogens (institutional epidemic/pandemic
preparedness and response measures) - Development and training on exposure response procedures
- Biohazardous spill clean-up and decontamination guidance
- Drills and exercises on biological hazard response
- Emerging pathogens (institutional epidemic/pandemic
- UAB Campus Medical Waste Management:
- Training and compliance
- Stericycle account setup, and termination
- Stericycle service liaison
- UAB Select Agent Program:
- Registration, permitting, inspection, and approvals with Federal
Agencies - Training, compliance, and reporting
- Registration, permitting, inspection, and approvals with Federal
- Perform periodic audits of laboratory facilities
- Collaborates with other EH&S staff to further promote a university–
wide safety environment.
