The Environmental Health & Safety team will roll out this year’s online emergency evacuation course this month. UAB is required to provide this training by both OSHA and fire codes, and it replaces the in-person training the department used to conduct. Students will receive a notification in Canvas indicating that they have been assigned the course. Employees will need to either recertify or take the course through the Campus Learning System. It’s important to complete the course in a timely manner.
“We strongly encourage all UAB students to complete this course and employees to ensure their training is up to date,” said Rob Emmons, director of Campus and Life Safety. “An emergency can happen anytime. The best way to prepare is to take this emergency evacuation course so you have a better understanding of how to react in your campus environment.”
The goal with online training is to better accommodate the campus community and minimize overall disruption, while helping achieve compliance across a larger audience. Specific buildings identified by Campus and Life Safety will have in-person evacuation trainings in addition to this online training requirement. The department will reach out to those groups individually as needed.
Students will receive a notification through Canvas in February. Employees will receive a notification through the Campus Learning System when they need to take the course or recertify their training.
