Fall 2024 Student on scooter 992x774Electric bicycles – and other electric micromobility vehicles – have become more cost effective in the past several years, leading to more of them on The University of Alabama at Birmingham’s campus. These vehicles are a great solution to getting around campus quickly. However, it’s important to know the dos and don’ts of operating and storing these vehicles on campus.

According to the UAB Bicycle and Other Wheeled Mobility Devices Policy, “Electric Bicycles and Electric Scooters are not permitted in any campus buildings.” Both are powered by lithium-ion batteries that, if damaged or used incorrectly, can catch fire or explode, per the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA).

The policy also states these devices “must be operated and parked in accordance with local, state, and UAB campus regulations. … Confirmed violations of this policy will result in appropriate consequences commensurate with the offense, for faculty, staff, and students, up to and including dismissal from academic programs or termination of employment, appointment or other relationships with UAB. Persons violating these operational regulations may be cited by UAB Police or UAB Transportation for continued or repeated violations on the campus.”

What’s the big deal?

  • If batteries are damaged or defective, they can overheat, catch on fire, or explode.
  • If lithium-ion batteries are on fire, they give off fumes from toxic gases and burn extremely hot – enough to burn down a building.

Recognizing a problem

Stop using the e-bike or e-scooter if you notice any of the following issues with the battery: strange odor, excessive heat, smoking, leaking, change in color or shape, or if it will not hold a charge.

What to do if there is a fire

  • Immediately leave the area
  • Do not try to fight the fire

  • Always follow the manufacturer’s instructions and use a qualified professional for repairs.
  • Only use the battery and charger designed for and included with the device.
  • Remove the device or battery when fully charged.
  • Prevent overloading the circuit by only charging the device or battery by itself.
  • Store batteries at room temperature when possible. Never charge below 32°F (0°C) or above 105°F (40°C).
  • Never store batteries in direct sunlight, in hot vehicles, or near flammable or combustible materials including liquids.
  • Recycle lithium-ion batteries at approved locations – never in the trash.
