Program Overview
Psycho-oncology is one of the key components of comprehensive cancer care. As an emerging subspecialty, psychosocial oncology services are now available in most of the major cancer institutions in the United States with evidenced-based research data to support assessment and treatments targeting the unique emotional and behavioral needs for cancer patients and caregivers. The need to train competent, culturally sensitive psycho-oncologists is on demand, yet to date only post-doctoral level training is available at a handful of large teaching hospitals.
UAB Center for Palliative and Supportive Care (CPSC), well known for its expertise in innovation and incubating new programs, has developed the FIRST Palliative Psychology and Psycho-Oncology Counseling Residency Program under the leadership of Dr. Sylvia Huang, Director of Psychology and Counseling Program. Dr. Huang designed a 2-year Counseling Residency Program that offers 2,000- 3,000 hours of supervised training including major and minor clinical rotations, didactics (average teaching evaluation rating =4.97 out of 5), and weekly supervision to train post-master level counseling residents.
Program Aim
The aim of the Counseling Residency Program is to equip and prepare next generation psychosocial oncology counseling workforce in the Southeast United States to meet the growing demands of comprehensive cancer care and support the mission of the Cancer Service Line and the Serious Illness ESP.
