2. Quarterly Self-care Workshop
PCRP's quarterly self-Care workshops aims to enhance residents’ awareness of self-care needs and teach self-care strategies and coping skills for sustainable practice in psychosocial oncology and palliative care. The workshops incorporates components to facilitate experiential learning, emotional health, as well as faculty and peer support.

Kayleigh Curry, MA, MPH, ALC, NCC
Kayleigh Coleman is an Associate Licensed Counselor (ALC) who joins the Psycho-oncology Counseling Residency Program in January 2021 and works under the supervision of Ms. Christal White Cummings, LPC-S. Kayleigh also works as a clinical research coordinator where she conducts research around caregiver support for patients with cancer. In 2019, she served as an intern at UAB’s Palliative Care Unit and Geriatric Clinic. She has experience working with issues across the lifespan including, but not limited to, identity work, adjustment difficulties, caregiver support, grief, and end-of-life care. She is honored to use her expertise to service our patients and be a part of the PCRP team.

Katherine "Katie" Michaels, MA, ALC, NCC
Katie Michaels is an Associate Licensed Counselor (ALC) who joins the Psycho-oncology Counseling Residency Program in October 2021 and works under the supervision of Dr. Kathryn Knolwton, PhD, LPC-S, NCC. She obtained her Master’s at UAB in August 2021, and she also works at the Division of Preventive Medicine as a Program Administrator. She has an extensive background volunteering with LGBTQ+ organizations on both local and national levels, and she desires to work in research that increases awareness about LGBTQ+ communities in the Deep South. Katie is very enthusiastic about working with the UAB Palliative Care & Geriatrics team, and she looks forward to meeting everyone.

Tamela Hughes, MA, ALC, NCC
Tamela Hughes is an Associate Licensed Counselor who joins the Psycho-oncology Counseling Residency Program (PCRP) in January 2022 and works under the supervision of Dr. Kenya Bledsoe, PhD, LPC-S, NCC, NCSC. She earned her Master of Arts degree from the Counseling Program at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. She currently serves as Program Director of the Psychosocial Oncology Training Academy (POTA). She has an extensive background in women’s cancer and spent her college internship year being a part of UAB’s Supportive Care Clinic delivering counseling services to geriatric patients and their families. She plans to continue doing work with women’s health as a therapist by focusing on maternal and reproductive health.

Price Mason, ALC
Price Mason an Associate Licensed Counselor who joins the Psycho-oncology Counseling Residency Program (PCRP) in January 2022 and works under the supervision of Ms. Heather Forbes, LPC-S. He is a recent graduate from UAB’s Counseling Program with a concentration in clinical mental health counseling. Price received a Bachelor of Arts in English from Auburn University and worked in public relations and marketing after graduating in 2010. This background fed Price’s interest in personal stories and the ways that people find meaning and purpose in their lives. In 2015, he began volunteering with the social workers at the Jefferson County Public Defender’s Office, where he helped Birmingham inmates connect with local resources. After this experience, Price switched gears and decided to pursue a career as a helping professional in 2018. During his practicum and internship of graduate school, Price worked with the UAB Palliative & Comfort Care Unit and the UAB Geriatric Clinic where he gained experience working with a range of populations and patient needs. Price has the desire to continue working with different types of populations and issues, while focusing on a human-centered approach to healing. Price is enthusiastic for the opportunity to work in the Psycho-Oncology Counseling Residency Program. He is excited to learn and grow as a mental health professional and looks forward to meeting everyone.
