UAB Department of Surgery resident Quince Gibson, M.D., recently had the opportunity to travel to Malawi- before the COVID-19 pandemic- to participate in a tropical surgery rotation. Gibson outlines his experiences during the rotation, which he calls “life-changing” and credits with giving him a “greater appreciation” for the surgical training and life in the United States.

New Division of Surgical Oncology Assistant Professor Ashley Holder, M.D., FACS has joined the Department of Surgery Grand Rounds Committee. The committee acts to organize dynamic speakers for department Grand Rounds. 

Department of Surgery Assistant Professor and Director of the Endocrine Surgery Fellowship Brenessa Lindeman, M.D., MEHP, FACS, will speak on an American College of Surgeons (ACS) Academy of Master Surgeon Educators™ panel “Virtual Surgical Practice and Education in the Post-COVID Era: Perspectives of Three Surgical Educators” on Jul. 14 from 7–8 p.m. CT.

UAB Department of Surgery Professor and Associate Vice Chair of Research James George, Ph.D. has been awarded the Anderson Innovation Award for COVID-19 in Kidney Diseases, made possible by an generous donation from the Anderson Family.

The General Surgery Residency Program at UAB will add two new pathways beginning this academic year: the Military Match Pathway and the Cardiothoracic Integrated Pathway.

Although Match Day 2020 did not look exactly like match day in years past due to the COVID-19 outbreak, fourth-year medical students across the country engaged online through social media, sharing where they were matched. While it was impossible to have everyone in the same room at one time, the excitement could still be felt virtually.

UAB graduate student and member of the Bibb Lab, Alan Umfress has been awarded a one-year National Institute of Health (NIH) Institutional National Research Service Award (T32) for $34,820 beginning on Jul. 1, 2020.

Jul. 1, 2020, the UAB Department of Surgery will welcome Saulat Sajjad Sheikh, M.B.B.S., as an assistant professor in the Division of Transplantation.

UAB Department of Surgery Associate Professor and Director of the Comprehensive Transplant Institute and Division of Transplantation Jayme Locke, M.D., MPH, has received a 5-year R01 grant amounting to approximately $4 million.

UAB Department of Surgery Professor John Holcomb, M.D., FACS, has accepted a two-year appointment to the editorial board of The Society of Federal Health Professionals (AMSUS) journal Military Medicine. Before joining the Division of Acute Care Surgery in Sept. 2019, Holcomb served for 23 years in the Army.

UAB Department of Surgery General Surgery Resident Cozette Kale, M.D., MPH, was awarded the American Society of Transplantation’s (AST) Live Donor Community of Practice (LDCOP) Travel Reimbursement Grant for the 2020 American Transplant Congress (ATC).

During the 2020 American Transplant Congress (ATC), a joint meeting of the American Society of Transplantation (AST) and the American Society of Transplant Surgeons (ASTS), UAB Department of Surgery Assistant Professors Douglas Anderson, M.D., MS, Babak Orandi, M.D., Ph.D., M.Sc., and Associate Professor Jayme Locke, M.D., MPH, were selected as recipients of AST awards or appointed to ASTS committees.

As part of the Southeastern Society of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery (SESPRS) annual meeting, the organization hosts a medical student abstract competition, where the top eight abstracts submitted are selected for oral presentation in a special session. For the first time in recent history of this competition, six of the eight selected abstracts were current or former medical students from the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB).

On May 31, 2020 Devin E. Eckhoff, M.D. will officially depart the UAB Department of Surgery after more than 25 years of service. He will join the faculty of the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center (BIDMC) as the Transplant Institute director, a professor and the Peter Medawar Endowed Chair of Transplantation.

Among those students, two of them will soon join the department as general surgery residents after matching into the program in March.
