Last month, Department of Surgery Clinical Assistant Professor Pamela Strickland, M.D., was a panelist in an American Society of Breast Surgeons (ASBrS)-sponsored webinar. Strickland practices at the UAB Montgomery Regional Medical Campus.

UAB General Surgery Resident Connie Shao, M.D. was one of six resident doctors across the country to receive an American College of Surgeons (ACS) Resident Research Scholarship. The two-year scholarship funds the research of the recipient and may be used for salary or stipend, research materials and travel related to the research.

May is National Trauma Awareness Month, and there are many ways that the UAB Department of Surgery and Division of Acute Care Surgery are recognizing the month in 2020. Specifically, the department is focusing on sharing information about fall risks, Stop the Bleed programs and distractions that can lead to trauma.

UAB Department of Surgery Assistant Professor Lauren Tanner, M.D., FACS, has been named Chief of the Emergency General Surgery (EGS) Service within the Division of Acute Care Surgery in the UAB Department of Surgery. In 2019, Tanner was named director of Trauma and Surgical Critical Care Fellowship and continues to serve as the co-director of the UAB Women in Surgery Program.

Several faculty published “Dermal Autografts in Breast Reconstruction: A Review of Past and Current Trends,” a review that summarizes key studies that highlight the feasibility of using dermal autografts versus acellular dermalmatrix (ADM) in breast reconstruction.

Match Day 2020 ushered in a new group of surgery residents, while saying goodbye to others who will soon leave UAB for different programs across the country. UAB students will continue their medical educations at 82 institutions across 30 states.

UAB Department of Surgery Assistant Professor Graeme McFarland, M.D., was awarded $10,000 in funding through the UAB Faculty Development Grant Program (FDGP). The Robert E. Reed Gastrointestinal Oncology Research Foundation (The Reed Foundation) has supported UAB for over 15 years and contributed more than $1.5 million to fund gastrointestinal cancer research and patient care under the direction of Vice Chair of the Department of Surgery Martin Heslin, M.D.

On May 30, 2019, Department of Surgery Professor Samuel Windham III, M.D., received the UAB Medicine Excellence Award– one of the highest honors that a UAB employee can receive. Windham was one of only two physicians selected, out of a total of 14 recipients.

Division of Acute Care Assistant Professor Jonathan Black, M.D., will orally present a co-authored abstract: “Universal Screening for Blunt Cerebrovascular Injury” at the 2020 Annual Meeting of American Association for the Surgery of Trauma (AAST) and Clinical Congress of Acute Care Surgery in Waikoloa, Hawaii in September.

UAB Department of Surgery Assistant Professor and Director of the Children's of Alabama Trauma Program Robert Russell, M.D., MPH, has received a two-year R13 Conference Grant from the National Institutes of Health (NIH).

Effective June 1, Transplantation Division Director Jayme Locke, M.D., will be promoted to deputy editor of the American Journal of Transplantation (AJT) from her previous role of associate editor. In this new role, she will manage the peer review process and build the academic direction and tone for the journal.

The UAB Department of Biomedical Engineering (BME) and the UAB Department of Surgery have joined forces to create the BME-Surgery Clinical Innovation Challenge.

Despite the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic and limitations on travel, we would like to plan for the 2020-2021 academic year and proceed with our Junior Faculty Exchange Program selection.

Cannon’s appointment will last two years, ending with the 2022 Academic Surgical Conference (ASC).
