Shao receives ACS Resident Research Scholarship
UAB General Surgery Resident Connie Shao, M.D. was one of six resident doctors across the country to receive an American College of Surgeons (ACS) Resident Research Scholarship. The two-year scholarship funds the research of the recipient and may be used for salary or stipend, research materials and travel related to the research.

May is National Trauma Awareness Month, and there are many ways that the UAB Department of Surgery and Division of Acute Care Surgery are recognizing the month in 2020. Specifically, the department is focusing on sharing information about fall risks, Stop the Bleed programs and distractions that can lead to trauma.
Tanner named Emergency General Surgery Service Chief
UAB Department of Surgery Assistant Professor Lauren Tanner, M.D., FACS, has been named Chief of the Emergency General Surgery (EGS) Service within the Division of Acute Care Surgery in the UAB Department of Surgery. In 2019, Tanner was named director of Trauma and Surgical Critical Care Fellowship and continues to serve as the co-director of the UAB Women in Surgery Program.

McFarland awarded UAB Faculty Development Grant
UAB Department of Surgery Assistant Professor Graeme McFarland, M.D., was awarded $10,000 in funding through the UAB Faculty Development Grant Program (FDGP). McFarland also serves as the co-director of the UAB Advanced Limb Preservation Clinic and Associate Director of the General Surgery Residency Program.

Assistant Professor and Associate Program Director of the Vascular Surgery Integrated Residency Danielle Sutzko, M.D., M.S., and Associate Professor and Director of the Division of Vascular Surgery and Endovascular Therapy Adam Beck, M.D., published their review “Big Data in Vascular Surgery: Registries, International Collaboration and Future Directions” in the Journal of Internal Medicine.

Windham approaches anniversary of receiving UAB Medicine Excellence Award
On May 30, 2019, Department of Surgery Professor Samuel Windham III, M.D., received the UAB Medicine Excellence Award– one of the highest honors that a UAB employee can receive. Windham was one of only two physicians selected, out of a total of 14 recipients.
