As a third-year student in the University of Alabama at Birmingham School of Nursing's Doctor of Nursing Practice Nurse Anesthesia Pathway, Anna Kate Mock-Jordan-Boney, BSN, RN, is fulfilling her clinical education requirements at DCH Regional Medical Center in Tuscaloosa, Ala. and has been recognized with DAISY Award for compassionate patient care as a nurse anesthesia student.

One of the patients Mock-Jordan-Boney treated at DCH recently nominated her for the award. The patient who nominated her recalled how calm and reassuring Mock-Jordan-Boney was before surgery.

The DAISY Award honors nurses who go above and beyond to provide patients with excellent and compassionate care. Mock-Jordan-Boney said she is humbled to receive a DAISY, and she feels the award also reflects various mentors and teachers who have helped her along the way.

“The DAISY Award tells me that I am capable of living up to the expectations of the nurses, respiratory therapists, nurse practitioners, CRNAs and doctors who have poured into me over the years. So many people have taken the time to teach me how to care for my patients and make them feel seen. The DAISY Award is a reflection of their hard work,” Mock-Jordan-Boney said.

Professor and Nurse Anesthesia DNP Pathway Director Susan McMullan, PhD, CRNA, CNE, CHSE, FAANA, FAAN, notes that Mock-Jordan-Boney is a dedicated student and an asset to the School.

“Anna Kate is an exemplary student with a positive, can-do outlook. She repeatedly volunteers for school related activities outside of the normal expectations, including assisting with simulation and Nurse Anesthesia Pathway intensives, participating in the SON kickball homecoming event and reaching out to recruit undergraduate nursing students to the nurse anesthesia profession. Most recently she was selected to participate in the UAB Hospital advanced cardiac clinical rotation during her last semester of her doctoral program. She is truly an asset to the Nurse Anesthesia Pathway, and we are certain will continue to rise as a leader as a graduate,” McMullan said.

Doing clinical education at DCH has given Mock-Jordan-Boney the chance to expand her classroom education as she learns alongside practicing CRNAs. She is confident this experience is preparing her to work with patients as a CRNA after she graduates in 2025.

“DCH is a great place to train. They take you under their wing and treat you like you are part of their family. The CRNAs and anesthesiologists at DCH take pride in the education they provide as well as the care they give to their patients. It has been a challenge in all the good ways that will make me a better provider upon graduation,” Mock-Jordan-Boney said.

Mock-Jordan-Boney also is complimentary to the UAB School of Nursing’s DNP Nurse Anesthesia Pathway. She explained she was drawn to the School and Pathway because of their excellent reputation. She is grateful for the mentorship, classroom education and clinical experiences she has found at the School.

“UABSON’s Nurse Anesthesia Pathway has been challenging, but it has been so much more rewarding than I expected. I have made friends that will last a lifetime and gained mentors that I know I’ll be able to reach out to for years to come. The faculty cares about the students in this program. You are not just a number, and that is evident in the way faculty members strive to give you the best education and clinical experience they can,” Mock-Jordan-Boney said.
